Last night I was just thinking, and I really really really miss Mickey.
He is the best dog I have ever known. He has all the qualities that people hope to have in a dog. He is extremely loving, loveable, loyal, playful, and just eternally happy except for when he is away from the people that he loves. When we leave the house and he is all alone, he can be heard howling inside the house. To me, it is the saddest sound I have ever heard. It's impossible to describe how miserable he is when he howls. All I can say is that after hearing that I wanted to cry myself. I really miss Mickey and I hate having to say goodbye to him when I go away. I wish I could have him up here with me.

I had English class outside today. It was a nice change of pace, especially since the building that I usually have it in is way too old for comfort.
Tonight I stopped by a meeting for the UConn chapter of the human rights group Amnesty International. At first it was a little awkward because everyone already knew everyone else from previous meetings and they also had a lot to say and I felt a little out of place because they knew more about what they were talking about then I did. After a while though, I started to feel more comfortable. We made bookmarks with quotes on them about free speech in honor of Banned Books week. During banned book week they will have readings of banned books around campus.
During Banned Books Week, Amnesty International directs attention to the plight of individuals who are persecuted because of the writings that they produce, circulate or read. Traditionally, Banned Books Week activities take place at the end of September -- but the featured cases are not confined to a week. (http://www.amnestyusa.org/Individuals_at_Risk/Banned_Books/page.do?id=1101492&n1=3&n2=34&n3=842)
The meeting was a lot more enjoyable once I was there for a little while and we all had a bunch of different conversations about things. It's a lot of fun and anyone at UConn that reads this should consider joining. The people are all extremely friendly people. If anyone is interested in what the group is about, visit http://www.amnestyusa.org/ and look around the site.

Stephen Colbert

So last night I was watching The Colbert Report and he was talking about this website, called the Daily Kos. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it.
Daily Kos (IPA: [koʊs]) is an American political blog, publishing news and opinion from a progressive point of view. It also acts as a discussion forum and group blog for a variety of netroots activists, whose efforts are primarily directed toward influencing and strengthening the Democratic Party. Additionally, the site features a growing political encyclopedia, glossaries, and other permanent content.
Daily Kos is among the most popular examples of a collaborative blog,[citation needed] offering posting privileges to limitless commentators.
I guess that it is a controversial site, and Stephen Colbert, with his conservative persona, made the site seem as if it were a Nazi website. He made a big deal about it and everything. So anyway he said he went undercover with the username "notstephencolbert" so no one would know it was him and posted a blog which he typed up on the show and posted the following...
Hungarians are dirty ghoulies who wash in peanut oil.
Heil healthcare!!!
Following this, he had the creator of the site come out and he interrogated the creator for his hatred of Hungarians in which he should be held responsible for what Stephen Colbert reported. Anyway, it was really funny and I ended up looking it up and he really did post it online which I thought was funny. So I posted the picture of the post below.

So on the second day of college, Katie and I walked around most of the day getting to know where everything is and to find out where are friends' dorms are to compare them. It was so extremely humid and just so hot it's crazy. I guess the temperature will have dropped ten degress by Saturday but that is an entire week. Classes start on Monday. I'm nervous about that because there will be so much work and I don't have any idea what to expect. I'm taking intermediate Spanish because I'm crazy and signed up for it when I didn't need to. Oh well, I guess I'll see how that turns out. Anywho, I took some pictures from this little shaded area we stopped at. It's pretty nice. The pictures probably won't do them justice but it really is a nice little area to just sit down and relax. I'm typing this on Sunday morning so the rest of the day I guess is more figuring out where everything is, I need to find a few things out, and probably more organizing of the room. Bye.
