My new Photo Blog

April 26, 2008 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

I'm finally ready to call attention to my photo blog - Riceminers.com.  It's been up for a few weeks now but I wasn't quite comfortable giving out the link while it was still incomplete.  Even now it still isn't 100 percent done, but you can head on over and check it out anyway.  It's a hobby that I'm hoping to improve on.  Many of the photos have already been posted here in the past.  Leave some comments, and if you want a print, just click details and you can order one through Google Checkout.  Keep an eye out more features and photos in the future.

Follow me on Twitter

April 26, 2008 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

After resisting the micro-blogging hype for all this time without any good reason, I finally gave in and created an account with Twitter.  If you're signed up, you should follow me: @seanhenri.  If not, you should head on over to Twitter.com and sign up.  It's both addictive and fun.

One thing that I really like about Twitter is that I can post updates via Google Talk or through text messages.  This is great for all of these bottled-up ridiculous thoughts I'm always having.  And I've gotten it synced up so it automatically changes my Facebook status.

Another thing I'm looking into doing is setting up a feed for all of my social network activity on the sidebar, much like what you see in your mini-news feed on Facebook.  So, keep an eye for that in the near future.  It'll be just one more way you can e-stalk me.  I apologize for being such a nerd.

So many ideas

March 25, 2008 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

On top of the previously mentioned idea that I have about a Connecticut related blog, two other projects you may see coming shortly are a photo blog (something I've played around with in the past), and a blog focusing on music /The Beatles.  More details to come.

Speaking of photos.. I've been experimenting with some over-saturation on the colors in some shots.  I'm trying to give them somewhat of a vintage feel.  A friend recently commented that it makes the photo almost look like a painting.  Below are two that I took over the weekend.  Any thoughts?

Essential Tools for the Web

March 23, 2008 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

Lately I've been advocating that my friends sign up for the many free services and tools that Google offers.  In case you haven't heard this from me yet, here's a list of things that should try out NOW:

  1. Gmail - With over 6 gigs of storage you'll never delete an email again.  It's fast, clean, and easy to use.  AIM is built right into it.  It allows you to send & receive mail from your old email accounts preventing you from having to tell everyone about your new address.  I have no doubt that it's the best email service out there.
  2. Google Talk - Google's instant messaging client.  Automatically displays all your contacts and notifies you when you have a new email.  The nice thing about it is all of your conversations are logged into your gmail account, so if you're trying to remember an address or a bit of information that somebody mentioned to you once, you can just review the convo in your email.  It also allows you to easily call your contact and send voicemails.  It's quicker and easier to use than AIM.  I honestly wish everyone would just switch over.
  3. Google Reader - An incredible way to take every website you'll ever want to visit and put it all in one place.  As soon as a website that you like (such as seanhenri.com) posts something new, you're instantly notified in google reader.  No more need to skip from website to website to see what's new.  It's like an Inbox for the web.  If you have no idea what I'm taking about, I'd recommend checking out my post about RSS feeds.  Should explain things a bit.  The really cool thing about google reader is that you can share interesting content with your friends almost instantly.  Sharing is caring.  To see what I've shared, click here.  It's addictive.  You'll see.
  4. Google Calendar - Self explanatory.  Another great way to share and collaborate.
  5. Google Docs - Come on!
  6. Google Maps - Don't use MapQuest.
  7. Google Profiles - It's like a business card for everything you do within google.  Use it to identify yourself when leaving business reviews in Google Maps, or for all the content you'll be sharing with your contacts in Google Reader.

There's more, but try these out first.  In my opinion these are the essentials for anyone daring to call themselves a web-savvy individual.  Test them out and you'll be hooked.  Let me know what you think, and don't hesitate to let me know if you have more to add to the list.

With a little help from my friends

March 07, 2008 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

Thanks to everyone who voted for my story in the Color Me Martinique contest!  I'm really impressed with all of the help I received.  Everyone really pulled through on this one and helped me gather an incredible amount of votes.  Still no official word on who the winners are yet but at this point it's looking pretty good.  The big announcement comes Monday.  Good luck to all of you.  Remember... you might have a vacation coming your way!

Win a trip to the French island of Martinique!

February 02, 2008 // 5 Comments  // Add yours »

I have a very simple request for everyone who reads this. I'd like for you go and enter a contest to win a trip to the French island of Martinique.  All you need to do is vote for my story "Getting Lost on the Appalachian Trail", and you could find yourself spending 7 days relaxing on Caribbean island.  Pretty easy right?

I ask this of you because if I'm the blogger who receives the most votes, I'll be winning a trip of my own to the island.  I was asked to participate in this contest along with 24 other bloggers by the French Government Tourist Office.  I had never thought about going to Martinique before, but after doing some research it actually looks like an interesting place to visit.  There's a volcano on the island as well as some mountains that offer spectacular views for hikers.  It seems like it would be a great place to do some kayaking as well.

So please go ahead and vote, and ask your friends to do the same.  But make sure they vote for my story!  I'll greatly appreciate it.  You can win, I can win, and we'll all be happy.

One way you could really help me out is by posting a bulletin on MySpace or Facebook that asks your friends to go vote as well!  To post on Facebook, simply click this link.  Or if you have a blog, maybe mention it there?  I mean who wouldn't want to win a trip?

Just a bit too soon

January 29, 2008 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

It turns out that the Color Me Martinique contest that I recently mentioned hasn't been officially launched yet.   So unfortunately the 127 votes that I've already received will not count.  If your one of those who have already voted - thank you.  I'll announce when the contest is officially up and running so everyone can go back and try it again.  That's really an impressive number of votes!  Thanks again!

Vote to send me to Martinique!

January 21, 2008 // 8 Comments  // Add yours »

I need your help!  The French Government Tourist Office has included a story of mine in a contest they're running, and I'd like to have your vote.  There's only 19 people being included in this contest and the person who has the most votes by March 1st will win a trip to Martinique!  My story is called "Getting Lost on the Appalachian Trail" and you can find it here.  Simply vote with a valid email address and you're done!

If my gratitude isn't enough here's one more incentive for you to help.  By simply voting you will be automatically entered to win a 7 night stay for two at the luxury Sofitel Bakoua in Martinique!  So go do it!  Just click HERE.

Looking back on 2007

December 29, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

At the end of each year many bloggers like to look back and brag about their best blog posts.  Well I'm not going to do that.  But I will point out some of the more interesting things I'll remember from 2007.

Overall, it was a great year.  I started a new and much more rewarding job, continued my education, developed some incredible friendships, and by years end had accomplished many of the goals I had set for myself twelve months earlier.

Of course there were hardships, but I feel like the good far outweighed the bad.  The things I'll probably remember most include my trips to Ireland and Oregon, seeing several of my long-time friends get married, the Paul McCartney concert in NYC, being an extra in Indiana Jones 4, my summer hikes, the Jenndy Henri adventures, Hazel's visit, and starting my new job.  There was plenty more of course, but not everything is meant for the world to know.

As for this blog, it's had a fairly successful year.  My traffic went up, my photos were featured in  popular print and web publications, and I was given valuable feedback from all sorts of people including my friends, complete strangers, and the well-known.  Receiving feedback is by far the most rewarding thing a blogger can ask for because it helps them realize that their content is actually reaching the people it's intended to.  Ive learned quite a few lessons from the people who took the time to share their thoughts with me after reading my posts.

To the people that come here for a minute or two each day - thanks for reading, thanks for the feedback, and I hope to have you coming back throughout 2008.

Traffic for SeanHenri.com

When managing a website, it's good to know who your readers are and where they come from. I dug into some recent stats and found that the vast majority of my traffic came from America, with about 60% coming from Connecticut.   New York and Massachusetts trailed closely behind.  That's about what I expected it to be.

This is a personal website and it's targeted mainly to the people who know me or may live nearby. For that reason I don't expect to get large numbers of people coming here from out of the region.  Although as you can see up above, I do still get a little bit of international traffic.

If you have your own website and want to get an idea of who's going there, give Google Analytics a try.

RSS for Dummies

December 06, 2007 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

I'm finding that many people out there don't understand what an RSS feed is, and that's not good.  Now this is important, so listen up.

Think about all the websites you check on a daily basis.  If you're a frequent user of the internet, chances are you check anywhere from 5-20 websites a day to see if there's anything new.  This can be time consuming, and many times you'll go to a website and find out it's the same old content.  Then there's the website you that you found to be very informative & interesting but you rarely think to actually go there.  It's in your favorites, but how often to you actually check those?  There's a ton of information out there that you're probably missing out on.

RSS simplifies things.  Instead of you going to each individual website that you want to check, the website sends the update directly to you, via an RSS feed.

There's two parts that make this work.  First, you need to subscribe to a reader.  This is the tool you use to read the content of an unlimited number of websites all in one place.  I prefer to use Google Reader, but there are many options available that you can chose from.

Second, you need to go to a website that you enjoy reading, like SeanHenri.com, and subscribe to their feed.  You'll usually be able to find it by locating the bright orange symbol that looks like this: .  If you don't see it anywhere on the website, look at the URL toolbar in your browser, and you'll likely see it on the right-hand side.

Click on that icon, and you'll be brought to a new page asking you which reader you would like to use to subscribe to the feed.  Chose the reader that you prefer, such as Google Reader, and you're done.

Now instead of visiting  each of your favorite websites on a daily basis, you can simply open up your reader and instantly see anything new that's been posted.  You spend much less time browsing and end up far more informed.  You'll find it becomes extremely addictive.  If you're still confused, watch this video from Common Craft. It'll make everything I just attempted to explain nice and simple.

My blogging friends

November 13, 2007 // 9 Comments  // Add yours »

Slowly but surely my wish to have more of my friends start their own websites is coming true.  Over the past few weeks I've seen my friends Mindy, Holly, and Jenn all started their own blogs/websites, and I've got a few more friends working on similar projects.  Seeing what my friends are up to keeps me motivated to move things along on my own, so I'm keeping fingers crossed that they really get into it and keep things active.

As for my own stuff, I think I've gotten past the writers block I've been experiencing the past month or so and expect to start posting far more frequently.  On top of that there is the redesign I have coming for this website, and I've got at least two other collaborative projects in the works that I hope to get started before the end of the year.  More to come on that shortly though.  It's time for me to head to class..

The buildup

November 04, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Not a heck of a lot's been going on lately.  Just nightly outings with friends, lot's of work around the house, some Halloween stuff (I was Mystery), and a ton of brainstorming.

Just found a great new social network called Behance.  Their slogan is "Make Ideas Happen".  Perfect.  It's initiation only, but you can get one here.

Some technical issues

November 02, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've got a few things working against me today.  One, I'm feeling a bit sick.  I think it's just the change in weather combined with a lack of sleep, but it's really starting to get annoying.  Two, I've run into some technical issues with this website and it's messed up how the images are being displayed.  There is also an issue with my email, so if you're trying to reach me at sean@seanhenri.com please know that I won't receive it.  If you need to reach me please use seanp284@gmail.com and I'll get back to you asap.

It's unfortunate timing for the email problem. A flyer for a local political campaign featured a photo of mine and used the bad email address for my contact info.  I think it was just sent to about 5,000 households in Derby.  Kinda sucks.

Cleanup Time

October 13, 2007 // 11 Comments  // Add yours »

Time for an upgrade.  It's been a while since I've made any real improvements to this website and I really want to expand the types of things that I have/can post here - beyond the blog, pictures, etc.  So you can expect some changes and experimentation to come over the next several days.  Feel free to criticize any changes you see.  The last time I made a big alteration to the structure everyone seemed to hate it so I had to quickly change it back.  I actually listen to the criticism and suggestions I receive here, so please give it.

On a somewhat related note:  I think everyone should have their own website.  Whether it be a personal blog like mine, or a portfolio-type website, or even just contact info, you should have some sort of fully personalized presence on the internet aside from your Myspace or Facebook profile.  Social network profiles should merely be additions to whatever your website is.  Be an individual and show some creativity.  At least that's my personal opinion.  Feel free to disagree.

Kevin's new blog

August 22, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

My brother Kevin, who recently wrote about his trip to Europe on this website, has started his own blog at http://seanhenri.com/kevin.  It'll be a good way for his friends and family to keep up with what he's been up to while he's away at college.  He may eventually get his own domain name but for now he'll be keeping it low-key.  He'll be posting on a fairly regular basis with his photos, thoughts, and possibly some music.  Go check it out.

New Webcam / Video Player

July 14, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've improved the webcam a bit.  I'm rarely on there, but during those few times that I am you'll now be able to communicate with me instead of just watching.  You can log into the chat, hear what I'm saying, and even communicate with video if you have a webcam of your own.  I'm gonna put it to use when I go to Ireland in a couple of weeks.  Whenever I'm not there I'll have some video playing so there won't be any "Offline" screen like there has been in the past.  It'll be a good cure for boredom.  You can find the webcam by clicking the "cam" link up above or by clicking HERE.

Alllllllsssooo, I've posted my video from Dave and Alexis' wedding here.  Enjoy.

And some new pics are up as always.  Take a look and leave comments please!

My New Photo Blog

June 26, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've gotten rid of the old photo albums and created a new photo blog in the Pictures section at http://seanhenri.com/albums/.  The idea is to have at least one new photo a day.  The photos will be tagged by name, subject matter, and date, allowing you to browse through photos by the tag of your choice.  You can also leave comments.  I've posted a bunch of pictures from the past several months to get it started.  Check back daily for new ones!

Getting bored

June 25, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

This design doesn't thrill me anymore.  A change is in order.  I need to come up with a new banner.  I want to re-structure this whole thing.  Some new features would be nice.  To my friends that come here on a regular basis - what do you like about this site?  What don't you like?  Anything annoy you?  What do you check most often?  Feedback would be appreciated.  I'd like to come up with a way for my friends to contribute a bit more.  I want to make some improvements.  Somebody give me ideas!

Update: Changing around the Pictures section.  You can now browse by the people in the photo or by the type of photo and I've also enabled comments!  Check it out!

Changing my photo albums

June 04, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

One thing that annoys me about the blogging service I use is the lack of the ability to leave comments in the photo albums.  I've been looking around for an alternative but have yet to find a service that allows me to smoothly integrate my albums on my site and still offer printing and comments.  If anybody has suggestions, please let me know.  Look for some changes and lots of new photos soon.

Adding to the map

May 12, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Looks like I'll be adding some marks to the map in August.  It'll be short and simple this time around.  I'll be staying in Limerick and I'm hoping to spend a day in Galway.  Everyone tells me I should go there so I figured it's time that I make it happen.  I'm really looking forward to seeing some old friends that I didn't get to see on my last trip out.

I plot out every place that I go to and write about on my blog on a map.  You can see it by clicking on the "map" link on the top of the page.  It's an interesting way for me to go back and look at the places I've been.

This blog is not dead

May 11, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've been too busy.  My laptop broke and I haven't had time to sit down and add stuff.  But the semester is a week away from being over, I'm buying a new pc, and I'm nearly settled into my new place, so I'll try to get back to normal shortly.

I have tons of pics from the past two months that I want to get up here.

Also, I'm thinking about picking up a new digital camcorder and posting video every couple days or so.  It will be unedited random stuff.

I've been doing some cool stuff over the past month, just haven't had time to write about it.

That's all for now.  Keep coming back.  Don't ditch me just yet.

F'n Google!

April 01, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Ha! I was a sucker and fell for Google's April Fool's joke this morning.  As soon as I got to work I logged into my Gmail account and saw they were offering a service called Gmail Paper - a way to get limitless print copies of your email for completely free.  Naturally I got excited and actually started writing a post about it, and in the process of doing further research I came across another new service called Google TiSP.  With this one they were claiming to offer free broadband.  It was when I got to the part in the service's FAQ about toilet flushing that I began to realize I had been tricked.  Funny stuff... go take a look.

If you get somebody good today or if you get tricked yourself, let me know.  I want some good stories.

If you're a Southern student like I am, and you've been frustrated with the lack of updates to the newspaper's website (HIGHLY unlikely, I know), I'm happy to say that things are about to change.  I'm the new Online Editor of the school's newpaper and I've begun to getting the site back up-to-date.  From now on you can read all of the latest SCSU related news at http://snews.southernct.edu.  But what I'm really excited about is the re-design I'm working on.  You can expect a much better blog-style website in the near future.

Writer's Block

February 28, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've been a little too busy and unorganized the past month to find as much time as I'd like to sit down and write a post each day. I've also had some trouble coming up with ideas for things to write about.  But I'm making it my New Month's resolution to try and make some kind of post each day, whether it's about something I did, plan to do, something that interests me, or just some cool links.  There will be something.

My readership has been up quite a bit the past two months and I'd like to keep it that way.  So if you've been a little disappointed in the lack of new content lately, please don't abandon me yet!!  I promise you I'll improve.

Return of the Cam

February 03, 2007 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

Lc3_angle_blk_fy06I've been getting requests to get the cam back up over the past several weeks and I was feeling kinda nerdy yesterday, so I just had to oblige.  The reason it went down in the first place was because I usually use my laptop and lately I've been taking it with me to school & work every day.  This past week I set up a small "office" or workspace, homebase, whatever you wanna call it... so I had room to set up another computer and along with it a webcam.  So now you can once again watch the ever-so-exciting video of me sitting here doing abosolutely nothing while I type.  If you're lucky you might catch me cough, sneeze, or sing a song, or maybe even eat something.  But if you watch, be sure to log in to the chat and let me know who you are.  Don't be creepy.  Nobody likes a creep.  I'll block you.

On another note - I just added a bunch of entries from August of 2003 from my trip to some of the National Parks out west.  The entries are very poorly written, but there's lot's of pictures and I think it's worth checking out - especially if you're into travel or have ever thought of visiting our National Parks.  I'm also going to add full photo albums from that trip as well as my 2002 trip down to the Florida Keys, but that won't come till later this week so check back.

Click here to read about my trip out west in 2003.

The New Look

October 22, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I was starting to hate the look of my blog so I made a few changes.  First I scrapped the blue colors because it didn't fit.  I rearranged the sidebar a bit, so you can browse my old posts by categories or "Tags".  The more a tag is used the larger the word is on the left.  Then I got rid of the old banner:

My old banner

and replaced it with what you see up on the top of this page.  The picture is a panoramic picture that was made by roughly combining 6 pictures together.  It was taken on "Corkscrew Hill" in Ballyvaughan, Ireland, in the region known as the Burren.  The picture is taken looking north towards Galway Bay.  Here's the high-res version:

The New Banner - High Res

I've also added descriptions to the photo albums in the Pictures section, changed the navigation, ditched the videos section, and made it easier to subscribe to my RSS feed by adding a link in the upper right hand corner.  Feel free to give me suggestions.  I'm always looking for feedback.

Lake Compounce

October 15, 2006 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

Me The weekend was pretty good.  I got to see a lot of people so I'm pretty happy.  On Friday afternoon I met up with Steph at O-Bar for happy hour and then my friends Matt and Heather came down and hung out for a while.  We headed down to New Haven to meet up with a whole bunch of people at BAR and had a great night.  On Saturday, I went to Lake Compounce with Steph, Justin, Nick, Brooke, Shane, and Stacey for the Haunted Graveyard.   It was freeeeeeeezing out but we all still had a great time.  Steph and I got there a little late so we hunted down the rest of the group and gave them a good scare at a 50's diner in the park.  We rode a few rides including a swing of death that Steph said was scarier than sky diving, and a haunted mansion where you have to shoot the ghosts.  I CLOBBERED Steph's ghost killing score -  1350 to 320.  I had wanted to ride the Boulder Dash but we ran out of time.   I did however get to go on the Rotor so I was happy.  After some damn good cheese fries, we got into line for the Haunted Graveyard, but it was getting late and the line was super long so we decided to get going.   On the way out I HAD to stop and get some deep fried Oreos on the way out.  SO damn good! I need to go buy a deep fryer.

Sorry for the slowness..

I know I've sucked at this whole blogging thing lately.  Unfortunately I didn't have internet access while I was in Ireland so I have to go back and rethink what I did day to day and I'm just taking forever with that.  Sorry.  BUT I'll be back on track very soon.  Hopefully by tomorrow or Tuesday.  Then the daily posts shall return.

The guys downstairs just moved out so we now have FULL control of the house.  Good times await!
I'm thinking Prague in January.

Here's a great pic from Steph's Lomo camera taken in Ireland:

I've been posting this cheesy advertisement all over myspace to get people to check out this website.  I just want some comments.  I don't think it's too much to ask for.

Yes I know that's very annoying.  Sorry.  But there's more obnoxious advertisements to come.  I've also been duplicating my posts on livejournal to try to pull some of those people over.

And, I don't know if anybody noticed, but I added my things to-do in life list on the right side of this page.  There's more to add, but I wanted to get it started.

My 200th Post

July 28, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Here's my 200th post since I began this blog in April of 2005.  Starting this blog was one of the best things I could have done.  It's a great way to keep a record of everything I've been up to in the past year or so.  I only wish that I started this earlier.  Everybody should really start a blog.  Don't tell yourself you have nothing to say because that isn't true.  As long as you're capable of thinking and walk out your door each day you're capable of making one. Go to Typepad.com and sign yourself up.  It's affordable and they make it very easy.  Once I get up to 250 I'm going to turn it all into a book so I have a hard copy.

It's been a bit of an uneventful week, but still a fairly good one.  Last Sunday me and Steph went on a quest for hot dogs in Newtown, then hung out at Wolfe Park in Monroe for a while.  At night a bunch of us went to go see M. Night Shyamalan's new movie Lady In the Water which was pretty bad yet kinda funny at the same time.  On Monday  I stopped down at Walnut Beach in Milford to meet up with some friends before I was called into work.  Spent the rest of the week working and helping some friends move out of their apartment  in Hamden.  Today was pretty good.  I got to sleep in, had some pretty good dreams, a nice easy day at work, a pretty good paycheck, and a huge thunderstorm on my way home which I loved.  Tonight some friends are coming over for the Yankee game then we're headed out.  I'm looking forward to rest of the weekend, I have nothing planned and it should be a great opportunity to get some things planned out and organized.

Steph took a bunch of pictures pictures from last Sunday.  Some of them are pretty good.  You can check 'em out here.

I've made a new photo album that I've been updating every couple of hours with pictures from my cell phone.  It'll mostly be just random images that I take each day, some good and some bad  It's just so I can get some pictures from my day to day activities will my normal camera is being fixed.  So go check it out in the pictures section.

This is a shot I took from the 6th floor of the Yale A&A building while bored at work today:

"About" Section

July 13, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I just added an "About" section to the navigation at the top of the page.  Check it out.   More will be added shortly.  I also added links to my friends blogs on the right side of the page.  So far I only know of Nugget's and Steph's, but if anybody else has one that I don't know about just tell me and I'll link to you.  If you don't have your own blog yet but wanna start one up just let me know and I'll tell you how to get started.

The Map

April 18, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've added a map that displays all of the places I have written about in my blog, taken pictures of, or are important to me in some kind of way.   If you click on a marker, a small bubble will pop up with a description of the post and link to the post or picture.   You can also switch to satellite view or hybrid view, and zoom in and out to view a larger or smaller area.

I haven't finished adding all of the archived posts yet and I don't expect to be finished for another several hours, but check it out anyway.  I'll plot out all of the pictures next.
