Another great Christmas

December 26, 2011 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

This Christmas was fantastic. Thanks to a long weekend off from work I had a ton of time to relax with Kelly and both of our families. Kelly gave me a new flash for my camera along with some ultra-cool Beatles Sgt. Pepper's art that I plan on putting up in my cubicle and.... BACON FLAVORED CANDY.  I also picked up a tripod and really cool ukulele. Not bad! Between all the parties, cookies and ham Kelly and I took it easy, did some wedding-related planning and listened to music.  Such a great few days.

Ghost Hunters at the Sterling Opera House

April 21, 2011 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

The SyFy channel featured Derby's Sterling Opera House on last night's episode of Ghost Hunters. The historic building is currently vacant and severely in need of restoration, so the city is attempting to bring it into the spotlight by billing it as haunted.  Mission accomplished considering last night's show brought in an estimated 2 million visitors.

This blog is not dead yet

January 18, 2011 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

This past year I nearly abandoned this blog, not because I didn't want to keep it up to date, but because I just never seemed to find the time.  Since early this summer I've become very busy working on projects and enjoying life in between, so there never seems to be time to sit down and recap. There's lots of stuff to cover though, so I plan on slowwwwly backdating posts. I'm also planning a re-design in the coming months along with an updated and expanded portfolio, with more focus on the design marketing work I do.

To get started again with the "life upates".. here's a few pics from two of the past three "Snowpocalypses" we've had.

The Housatonic River in Fall

This was taken from the overlook at Little-Laurel Lime Ridge in Seymour while hiking this past weekend. It's one of my favorite views in the valley and another reason why I love Connecticut.

The Perseid Meteor Shower from Goshen

August 14, 2010 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

Knowing the Perseid Meteor Shower was supposed to peak last night, a few friends and I packed into my brothers car and took the hour long drive up to a field in Goshen, CT to watch the show from one of the darkest night skies in the state.  I didn't get the shots I had hoped for, but it was still a great time, and I did catch a meteor or two.

The Lost Stable

Here's a pretty interesting documentary about the mysterious demolition of a carousel at the abandoned Pleasure Beach in Bridgeport. The film is still in a "rough cut" stage but I thought it was good enough to share. It was filmed and directed by Peter Vandall, a film student SVA in NYC.  You can see some of his other work at http://petevandall.com. For a bit of history about Pleasure Beach click here.

Cleanup of the Naugatuck River Scheduled in Derby

April 14, 2010 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

Naugatuck River Cleanup

The second annual volunteer effort to cleanup the banks of the Naugatuck River in Derby has been scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 8am to 4pm. There will be a one hour lunch between noon to one.  I participated last year and believe me, a ton of help is needed.  There is an enormous amount of junk remaining along the banks of that river.  More info is available on the Valley Indy and on Derby's website.

Ben Folds and a Piano

I had the chance to see Ben Folds at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport tonight. Great show, although some songs were strange without their orchestrations. The crowd just had to make up for it.

A Tri-State Hike: Brace Mountain to Mount Frissell

March 24, 2010 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

Brace Mountain

This past weekend my friends and I drove to Taconic State Park in New York for our first major hike of the year. We took the South Taconic Trail, which brought us along the top of Brace Mountain and then over to Mount Frissel, Connecticut's highest point.

It was a steep climb when we first started off but the views were rewarding.  From the top of Brace Mountain we could see clear across the Hudson Valley and even as far as the Catskill Mountains.  At the top we came across three paragliders who were having a bit of trouble due to the strong winds.  We stuck around about 20 minutes or so to watch a launch only to see the guy spin upside down and then crash into the bushes - a firm reminder why I avoid doing that sort of thing.

Brace Mountain

From the top of Brace Mountain we continued on for about another 2.5 miles along the ridgeline towards Mt. Frissell, the highest point in Connecticut. The peak of Mt. Frissell is actually in Massachusetts, but the south slop lies across the Connecticut line and is slightly higher than Bear Mountain, the highest peak in the state.

It wasn't the most enjoyable part of the hike.  Along the way the trail dipped down a bit and suddenly we were walking through a foot of melting snow. We made a quick stop at the tri-state marker and at the CT high point before eating a late lunch and heading back towards Brace Mountain for a few more great views of the Hudson Valley.

Bulls Bridge

October 28, 2009 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

My friend Mindy and I have been going on little adventures the past few weekends. Recently we drove up towards Litchfield County on a quest for some food and hot apple cider. We were successful, but only after wandering around for a bit near Bulls Bridge in Kent  - one of the few remaining covered bridges in the state.

Bullsbridge

There's a bunch of cool stuff in the area.  There's the bridge, rapids, a scenic overlook, and a huge waterfall coming from a power station just a short distance up river.  The hiking trails bring right down along the water and eventually will connect you to the Appalachian Trail.

October-114

We did eventually find our cider at a small cafe tucked away in the corner of a shopping area in the center of Kent. In line next to us was Seth MacFarlane and Mila Kunis. We didn't recognize them at first but after hearing them talk for a bit we realized who it was.

If you want directions to Bulls Bridge I've got a short write-up of the area on the Connecticut Weekender here.
