So many ideas

On top of the previously mentioned idea that I have about a Connecticut related blog, two other projects you may see coming shortly are a photo blog (something I've played around with in the past), and a blog focusing on music /The Beatles. More details to come.
Speaking of photos.. I've been experimenting with some over-saturation on the colors in some shots. I'm trying to give them somewhat of a vintage feel. A friend recently commented that it makes the photo almost look like a painting. Below are two that I took over the weekend. Any thoughts?

Try something new
March 25, 2008 //

It's always nice to get out and try something new instead of following the same old routine. I did a bit of that on Saturday and Sunday. My friend Mindy and I went into New Haven to check out the Yale Art Gallery. I was a bit surprised by the amount of famous artworks featured their permanent collection. I spent years working directly across the street and I never had any clue they were there. The gallery is free to the public and absolutely worth your time if you've never been there.
Aside from the gallery, we met up with our friend Kam for some lunch at the Educated Burgher, drove up to East Rock, and ventured down to the coastline to check out Fort Nathan Hale.
The day's adventures got me thinking. There are so many things to do around Connecticut that many people my age never seem to think of doing. I wonder if maybe they simply don't know about them. I frequently hear complaints that "Connecticut sucks" or have people tell me they can't go out because they're low on money. Well aside from my lunch and gas, everything I did on Saturday was free. It doesn't cost a penny to go to a park or the beach. Museums and galleries rarely charge for admission and if they do it's a few dollars at the most. There's so many things to do on a weekend aside from just going to a bar every Friday night at 10.
We live in a great state. It's filled with cultural, historical, and recreational attractions. Its proximity to New York, Massachussets and Rhode Island make it even better. There's tons of great places to see and things to do that are all within a day's drive. So an idea I have is to start up a new blog that focuses on these sort of things. I have a few co-authors lined up, so it may be something we get going soon. The blog will feature strictly localized content. It's just an idea now, but I see this coming together in the near future. It needs a name. Any thoughts?

Looking back on 2007
December 29, 2007 //

At the end of each year many bloggers like to look back and brag about their best blog posts. Well I'm not going to do that. But I will point out some of the more interesting things I'll remember from 2007.
Overall, it was a great year. I started a new and much more rewarding job, continued my education, developed some incredible friendships, and by years end had accomplished many of the goals I had set for myself twelve months earlier.
Of course there were hardships, but I feel like the good far outweighed the bad. The things I'll probably remember most include my trips to Ireland and Oregon, seeing several of my long-time friends get married, the Paul McCartney concert in NYC, being an extra in Indiana Jones 4, my summer hikes, the Jenndy Henri adventures, Hazel's visit, and starting my new job. There was plenty more of course, but not everything is meant for the world to know.
As for this blog, it's had a fairly successful year. My traffic went up, my photos were featured in popular print and web publications, and I was given valuable feedback from all sorts of people including my friends, complete strangers, and the well-known. Receiving feedback is by far the most rewarding thing a blogger can ask for because it helps them realize that their content is actually reaching the people it's intended to. Ive learned quite a few lessons from the people who took the time to share their thoughts with me after reading my posts.
To the people that come here for a minute or two each day - thanks for reading, thanks for the feedback, and I hope to have you coming back throughout 2008.

Own your name
December 16, 2007 //

Stop for a second and think about how many people on earth might have your exact name. Where do they live? What do they do for a living? Are they well known? Young? Old? Good? Bad? Criminal?
Say your name is Jane Googleydaski and you've just applied for a job. Your potential employer decides to Google your name, and clicks on the first result that they see. It turns out theirs another Jane Googleydaski living in the same state as you, and they're a racist bunny rabbit killer. What's worse is that they own the domain name JaneGoogleydaski.com, and they run a website broadcasting their racist bunny rabbit killing ways. The boss doesn't know that this isn't the good Jane who applied for the job, and there's a good chance her resume has now gone from the candidate pile to the paper shredder.
Unfortunately, since the good Jane Googledaski never though to own her domain name, the bad Jane beat her to it, and now anybody who wants to look her up is going to think she's the racist bunny rabbit killer.
You can prevent this tragedy from happening to you by going to a domain registrar like GoDaddy or 1and1 and purchasing yourname.com. It's cheap - between $6.99 and $8.99 a year, and easy to set up.
What do you do from there? It all depends on what you want to do with your life. The idea is to market yourself, and to control the first bits of information somebody finds when they search for you. If you want to become a lawyer, just put up your resume. If you want to be a professional photographer, display your photography. If you handyman looking for work, list your abilities and give people a way to contact you. But if you're really stuck on what you'd put there, don't sweat it. At least you don't have to worry about another person registering your domain name. You now own it.

A few early morning thoughts...
December 05, 2007 //

Didn't have anything worthy of a full post, so here's a collection of what's on my mind this morning, as well as a few links:
- I got absolutely no sleep last night. The air was too dry, and as a result, I couldn't breath. Sean needs a humidifier. Sean is tired.
- I enjoy the the music in the iPhone commercials. Who writes that stuff?
- New John Lennon music video collection out on iTunes yesterday. 21 videos for 25 bucks.
- Franz Ferdinand should really put something on their website. And maybe release a new album?
- Google Analytics makes my life easier.
- Gmail now has AIM built into its chat feature. No more annoying AIM client eating up my computers resources. As a result, life is better.
- Grand Central gives you one phone number that automatically forwards to home, cell, and work number. Not sure if that's something I'd actually want to do, but it's nice knowing the option is there, and it's free.
- My coffee maker sucks. So do the Starbucks egg nog lattes. They may sound good, but they aren't. Avoid them.
- Days just don't seem long enough anymore. I wake up, and the next thing I know it's 10 pm. The time gods should either add more hours, or add an extra day to the week. 8 days a week.
- People should not blog or write anything publicly if they fear being criticized/made fun of. Because it will most certainly happen.
Thus concludes my thoughts of the moment.

My blogging friends

Slowly but surely my wish to have more of my friends start their own websites is coming true. Over the past few weeks I've seen my friends Mindy, Holly, and Jenn all started their own blogs/websites, and I've got a few more friends working on similar projects. Seeing what my friends are up to keeps me motivated to move things along on my own, so I'm keeping fingers crossed that they really get into it and keep things active.
As for my own stuff, I think I've gotten past the writers block I've been experiencing the past month or so and expect to start posting far more frequently. On top of that there is the redesign I have coming for this website, and I've got at least two other collaborative projects in the works that I hope to get started before the end of the year. More to come on that shortly though. It's time for me to head to class..

Not a heck of a lot's been going on lately. Just nightly outings with friends, lot's of work around the house, some Halloween stuff (I was Mystery), and a ton of brainstorming.
Just found a great new social network called Behance. Their slogan is "Make Ideas Happen". Perfect. It's initiation only, but you can get one here.

Never trust a landlord with a mullet
September 22, 2007 //

Seriously. If you're landlord looks like Tony Little, ignores all of your complaints, has a funny stench during the summer months, writes your lease on a napkin, tells you about previous tenants who killed a ferret in the dryer, goes by the name Captain Vantastic, has a bizarre fear of fire, and claims to have been in the nightclub, gym, postal delivery, art dealership, and lifeguard businesses, RUN. I'm not necessarily singling out any specific individual here. I'm just giving some generic and valuable advice to anyone who should you ever encounter such a strange individual.
So anyway, recently I've begun to miss the idea of having my own apartment. I really enjoyed the neighborhood that I used to live in, and now I feel like it would be a bit better because I have many more friends down that way than I did in the past. On top of that, I find myself going down that way during my free time much more then I do anywhere else. It's not that my current living situation is bad, because it isn't at all. But there's something very different about living at home and living on your own.

In other news: I recently left Yale, and now I'm working full time doing website development / administration for a company in New Haven. So far I really enjoy it, and I think I've made the right move. I've also begun volunteering as a Crew Advisor for a BSA Venture Crew 33 in Derby, and I'm still trying to squeeze in my schoolwork in between all of this. So I've been a bit of a busy person lately, resulting in the slow updates.

I'm at home sick today. Woke up and felt like crap so I decided it would be a good day to call out and catch up on some rest.
And since I have nothing new to post I've decided to go back and review the goals for 2007 that I posted at the beginning of the year. It's been about 4 months since I last checked it. A few things have come off the list and a few things have been added. I've crossed off the ones I've succeeded in, and I've made comments on most of the others.
- Travel to Peru - Scrapped. Ireland instead. Peru comes next year.
- Eliminate credit card debt - 50% of the way there.
- Reduce all other debt - Comes next.
Get a gym membershipGo consistently until late spring-- Go consistently again in the winter
- Improve my photography - I can't really measure this, but I think I'm slowly getting better.
- Meet Brian Wilson - still not sure how, but there's half a year ahead of me.
- Spend a weekend in California - in the plans.
- Spend a weekend somewhere in Europe - next week I'll be in Ireland.
- Find more friends with common interests - Done. But I'm not ready to cross this off yet.
- Strengthen the friendships that already exist - A few steps forward and few steps backwards.
- Learn about wine
Get paid to design and develop websites- Promote with a separate website. - Being worked on now.
Continue my education at SCSU- Glad to be back but I can't wait to finish. So much stress.- Find 4 new interests or hobbies
- Read more books (at least 1 a month) - July=Wikinomics....
- Meet Sir George Martin
- Start doing community service again
Get to know some Black Rock locals- I succeeded, then moved away.- No fast food - Very difficult living in Fast Food Valley.
- Eat more veggies, and enjoy it. - Failed. See above. Will try again.
- Be earning 20% more by the end of '07 than I was at the beginning of the year - I hope.
- See Spamalot on Broadway - In September.
Stop whistling when I have nothing to say to somebody that I don't know that well- Revise this list every few months and check progress. - 50% done.
- NEW - Learn to play guitar. - Started mid-July, slowly making progress but keeping at it.
- NEW - Cross off two items on my To-Do-List posted on the right hand side of this blog.

Throw away your television!
July 27, 2007 //

// Add yours »
Imagine how much more productive you'd probably be if you never had the option of watching television. Suddenly you'd have countless extra hours in a week when you'd have to find something else to do.
It's hard to imagine what the world would be like if suddenly there was no television. Would people go outside more? Would you see more people walking down the streets or socializing with friends or neighbors on their front porches? Would the obesity epidemic go away? Would you actually do something beneficial for yourself or for society?
Probably not. The couch potatoes would simply migrate to their computer and play video games or surf the internet. But still, I think that would definitely be a step in the right direction. At least a person playing a video game would have to do some thinking. The internet could be a great source of information and goes way beyond just the sound-bites and headlines that TV news gives you.
Television allows you to be mindless. It encourages you not to think. TV networks want you to sit there and be sucked into the garbage they're feeding you so they could keep making a buck. Seriously... how many times have you watched a reality show on VH1 and when it was done thought to yourself "wow, that was half hour well spent"??? Never!
Some people might actually go out and start experiencing life. If they did they would find that their life had changed for the better and they'd never go back. Does anybody honestly believe that watching somebody experience something on TV is better than experiencing it for yourself?
To my friends that come home from work every day and turn on the television to unwind - do you have any idea how much time you actually waste sitting there? If you spend just two hours a day watching television you will have lost over 4 years of your life by the time your 50. Imagine what you could have done with those 4 years!! Think of all the people you could have met, all the places you could have gone and all the things you could have accomplished. Your life could be totally different.
If you're reading this - I DARE you to disconect your tv for a full month. Hide it somewhere if you need to. And don't go over your friends house to watch it either. I guarantee you you'll notice a positive improvement in your life. And I'm not going to be a hypocrite on this one. Tonight my TV leaves my room and leaves it leaves for good.

The High School Days

My friends and I used to do some great stuff when we were younger. We need to bring back the days of the Riceminers. I've started putting the old videos up on YouTube and Riceminers.com still gets close to 100 hits a day... so I think I should start putting up new content again. I've been saying that for a while but it's been hard motivating people. So I might just go ahead with it on my own and see who joins in. Josh, Steve, Bobby, Nick, Shane, Chris, Justin, Kevin, and everyone else who used to be involved in some way... if you have any interest, let me know.
Here's "The Dream". It was put together using an old school camcorder, two vcr's, and a karaoke machine back in 2001.

This design doesn't thrill me anymore. A change is in order. I need to come up with a new banner. I want to re-structure this whole thing. Some new features would be nice. To my friends that come here on a regular basis - what do you like about this site? What don't you like? Anything annoy you? What do you check most often? Feedback would be appreciated. I'd like to come up with a way for my friends to contribute a bit more. I want to make some improvements. Somebody give me ideas!
Update: Changing around the Pictures section. You can now browse by the people in the photo or by the type of photo and I've also enabled comments! Check it out!

Finals are the Devil
May 14, 2007 //

Every semester right about finals time I get severely stressed out and then I start to lose sleep. Last night I tried falling asleep for 4 hours with no luck. I finally passed out around 4am and then I woke up at 8:30. Tonight I have an insane amount of work to finish up but I'm so tired I just can't get it done. My final for my Web Technology course is at 10 AM and I have to do a semester's full of work before that.
Fact is, I'm extremely frustrated with every one of my courses. Sometimes I feel like I'm just throwing out thousands of dollars a semester. Many of my assignments have been a complete waste of time. And since I've had PLENTY of other much more important things to devote my time to over the past couple months, I've ignored them. So now I'm paying for it and this week it's hell for me. But just two more days till freedom comes. If I spent 2 more seconds in front of a computer screen my eyes and mind will explode.
On another note, I've set up a youtube account and I'm hoping to pick up a digital camcorder soon. Just an added level of "nerd" for everyone. Now go check out this tortoise from hell.

I've been too busy. My laptop broke and I haven't had time to sit down and add stuff. But the semester is a week away from being over, I'm buying a new pc, and I'm nearly settled into my new place, so I'll try to get back to normal shortly.
I have tons of pics from the past two months that I want to get up here.
Also, I'm thinking about picking up a new digital camcorder and posting video every couple days or so. It will be unedited random stuff.
I've been doing some cool stuff over the past month, just haven't had time to write about it.
That's all for now. Keep coming back. Don't ditch me just yet.

Thinking Barcelona
January 31, 2007 //

After visiting Ireland back in September, I've become hooked on foreign travel. I've been dying to take another trip ever since I got back, and have been playing around with a lot of ideas of where to go. Well, one of the things my list of goals for 2007 is to go somewhere in Europe, so I'm thinking Barcelona will be next on the list. It would be a short trip - just a long weekend, but I think that would be enough. I've always wanted to visit Spain, and Barcelona attracts me because of it's proximity to the Medditeranean, it's culture, and it's unique architecture, particularly Antoni Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia, the Casa Batllo, and the Casa Mila. Just an idea at this point, but I'd really like to go. I'm hoping to book the trip soon.
Now I have some motivation to do well in my Spanish class. Has anybody ever been to Spain? Barcelona? I'm looking for travel tips and suggestions on what to do if I go out there.
London would be my second choice, but I think it's a little to expensive to travel there right now.

Annoying Habit
January 21, 2007 //

I'm sitting here at Yale, enjoying some Cheez-It's, a hot pocket, and a cup of water, and I've decided I need to add something new to my list of plans for 2007. I need to stop whistling when I have nothing to say to somebody that I don't know that well. A student just came up and asked me for some help. So I followed them down the stairs to the 4th floor to see what the problem was. Along the way it was awkwardly silent, so I started whistling a short melody that I made up on the spot. I've noticed that I do this all the time. It's dorky and it annoys me. I don't know if it's a nervous thing, from shyness, or what. But it must stop.
Just thought I'd share.

Plans for 2007
January 18, 2007 //

// Add yours »
It's a new year and I have a long list of things I'd like to accomplish, obtain, or try out over the next 12 months. Some of the goals are more difficult to achieve than others, but I try to include everything no matter how over the top they are because then I tend to accomplish more. I had some fairly lofty goals for 2006 and I managed to accomplish nearly all of them. I met Paul McCartney, traveled to Ireland, finally moved out, bought a new car... so I'm convinced that almost any goal is achievable. Your success is only determined by the amount of effort you put into it. So here's my list for 2007, both the easy and the hard:
- Travel to Peru
- Eliminate credit card debt
- Reduce all other debt
Get a gym membership- Go consistently until late spring
- Go consistently again in the winter
- Improve my photography
- Meet Brian Wilson
- Spend a weekend in California
- Spend a weekend somewhere in Europe
- Find more friends with common interests
- Strengthen the friendships that already exist
- Learn about wine
- Study Irish history
- Get paid to design and develop websites
Continue my education at SCSU- Start working full time or intern somewhere in the field of communications.
- Find 4 new interests or hobbies
- Read more books (at least 1 a month)
- Meet Sir George Martin
- Volunteer in a Presidential candidate's upcoming campaign (provided I like a candidate enough)
- Start doing community service again
- Get to know some Black Rock locals
- No fast food
- Eat more veggies, and enjoy it
- Be earning 20% more by the end of '07 than I was at the beginning of the year
- See Spamalot on Broadway
- Stop whistling when I have nothing to say to somebody that I don't know that well
- Revise this list every 4 months and check progress.
I'll add to this list as new goals pop into my head. If I'm successful with a goal, I'll cross it off. In April I'll see where I stand I and post my progress.

Strange Dream
January 18, 2006 //

// Add yours »
So last night I had a dream that I was going somewhere at night with Nick Moore and my two brothers. Nick was driving, I was in the front passenger seat, and Justin and Kevin were sitting in the back. We left my house, went down by Apollo Pizza in Derby, and then went towards the Derby/Shelton bridge. The bridge was different than it is in real life - one lane and wooden, the river below was in a canyon and the water was very deep.
Nick turned onto the bridge and started driving very fast. About halfway over the bridge we saw that a section of the bridge was out, but we were going much too fast to be able to stop in time. Nick hit the gas in the hope that we'd somehow jump across, but it didn't work, and we smashed into the water and sank fast. The descent down to the bottom seemed very long, and as we were falling the back of the car fell downward and the front lifted up, so I was looking upwards as we sank and could see the streetlights from the bridge fade as we fell further and further down. When we hit bottom it was pitch black, and I assumed we would die. I was afraid that if we got out of the car the water pressure would kill us so I sat there paralyzed.
The next thing I knew, Nick, Justin, and Kevin had opened their windows and Nick and Kevin had started to swim to the surface. I couldn't get my window open so I smashed it open with my feet, but I was caught on my seat belt and couldn't get out. Justin helped my break free and pulled me through the window. We all made it to the surface and when we knew that everyone was fine we began to walk back to my house, and never called for help.
When I woke up this morning the first thing I did was turn on the news. There was a story on about a 911 call from a girl who was trying to escape from a sinking car that her drunken grandfather had driven into the water.
Just thought I'd share.

Any hope I had of going to Vegas for spring break just flew out the window. At this point it looks like I'm not going to get to go anywhere that week, so I'll only have one more chance at a real spring break before I graduate. Maybe if I have enough time and money I'll be able to take a short trip over the weekend instead of the full week.
My other big plan for the year - traveling to Greece, also hit a big set-back this past weekend, but I'm hoping I'll still be able to go. I should know about that sometime fairly soon.
At least I definately still have camping and Wildwood to look forward to. Not quite up to the same level, but it's something.

There are so many things I wanna squeeze into this year. I have spring break, Greece, camping, and Wildwood to work out, then I'd like to find some time to travel to California before the year is over. Next year I'm planning on going to England and Ireland. In 2008 I'm planning on hitting up the rest of Europe. I'd like to find a way to get back down to the Florida keys as well, and I'm still hoping to study abroad somewhere before I graduate. Everybody thinks I'm all talk but I'm sure I'll go everywhere I plan on. I'll bet you 50 bucks on it.
Somebody remind me to renew my passport.

Christmas Eve Dream

Sometimes I have dreams that are so realistic that I just don't want to forget them. But no matter how hard I try I still lose most of it. On Christmas Eve I fell asleep around 1 AM and had this crazy, very long dream that was so real that I have trouble accepting it was just my imagination. Now that it's almost 24 hours later I've forgotten most of it but I wanted to write down what I remembered in case it triggers the rest some day.
So here's a brief summary:
I was working with my mom putting books and DVD's on the shelves at Walmart in Naugatuck when she told me that she needed to get an important letter to one of her co-workers in Ohio. It was Christmas Eve so there was no US Postal Service, so she asked me if I could drive there that night to deliver it. I was told that I only had until sunrise to go there and make it back because I had to open presents in the morning. I decided to go because I'm always up for a road trip and I thought it would be a fun time. In my dream my friend Kristen Fusco lived in Ohio, so I figured I could go visit her while I was over there. Before I departed on my trip I figured that I'd need some food so I stopped in at Burger King and ate some chicken nuggets with Michele Soda. While we were eating a homeless man with a British accent came up to us and asked for some money and told us that he had met my brother Justin and Nick Moore earlier in the day at Airway Driving School in Shelton and they had referred him to me. I gave him a couple bucks and some change and hoped he would leave me alone but he didn't. So I jumped in my car and began my drive to Ohio... but the homeless guy followed me all the way there.
I've forgotten a big chunk of what happened after that... but I remember Ohio being like a huge National park and going hiking for a long time while I was there. While I was in the woods there was a field on a hillside with a bunch of rocks in the center. When I went there I heard my Dad yelling for me and that's when I woke up, because my Dad was trying to get me up since it was Christmas morning and I had slept in. There was so much more to the dream, but I've forgotten most of it.
I used to work with my Mom at Walmart for a couple months in 2003, and I think I worked with her on Christmas Eve of that year, so that is probably why it was in my dream. I ended at Burger King eating chicken nuggets because the last time I went there was when I went for a walk this summer on my own one night and I stopped in for some chicken tenders. There used to be a homeless man that used to sit on the fence right outside of Burger King every summer, and two years ago I tried to give him some stuff to help him out but he refused... so that's where he came from. I think he had a British accent just because I was listening to the Beatles last night. He said that he had seen Justin and Nick at Airway Driving School because I have a video of myself and my friend Nick going there to pick up my brother after he had just passed his driving test. Justin is always claiming that I don't like helping people so thats why the homeless guy came to me looking for help. Michele was in my dream because I've hung out with her a couple times this week. I can't explain why I was driving to Ohio... maybe because of my CT History class where I learned that CT used to claim land in Ohio back in the colonial days. I took that CT History class just this past semester. Kristen is somebody I'd love to go visit, and I suppose I placed her in Ohio just because It is about the farthest I'd be able to drive in a car if I wanted too.
And that was my dream. Sorry if it isn't too interesting, but I wanted what I remembered written down. Goodnight.
