The Beach Boys... sort of.

February 20, 2007 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

The Beach Boys Touring Band

Yesterday I was lucky enough to see The Beach Boys perform at  the Mohegan Sun Arena.  The only problem was that the only original member that performed with the group was Mike Love, so it would be more appropriate to say that I saw one of the Beach Boys in concert.  There was another guy there that used to go on the road with the Beach Boys following Brian Wilson's departure from touring named Bruce Johnston, but I wouldn't count him as an original.  Nevertheless, the show was great.  I've been a Beach Boys fan my whole life so it was really cool to hear the songs played live.  Mike Love was the lead singer on half of their major hits so it wasn't too big of a disappointment that the other originals weren't there.  For some reason the crowd was extremely stiff and unresponsive.  Hardly anybody sung along, stood up, or danced.  That bothered me, as I was hearing some of the greatest pop singles of all time being performed live and there was barely any reaction to it.  But I guess when you go to a concert where 90 percent of the crowd is 65 and older that kind of thing happens.  Now I just need to see Brian Wilson perform.

After the show we walked around the smoke filled casino for a while and then stopped in some BBQ restaurant for dinner.  It was a good way to spend a fake holiday.

Mix CDs

February 19, 2007 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

I've been trying to find some new music that I can really get into, but everything new that I've come across just ends up being mediocre.*   Everything on the radio is pure crap; it's all bland and non-creative.  And the internet is so disorganized it's impossible to find a good source for finding new stuff.  I want to hear something and completely get hooked.  Just about everything I listen to now and love (like The Beatles, Queen, The Doors, and The Beach Boys), I've been listening to ever since I was a kid.  Not that I don't like new music, it just seems that there isn't anything as groundbreaking as there was in the 60's and 70's.  So I'm asking everyone that comes here to send me a mix CD, and I'll send you one in return.  Actually, I'm begging you to do this.

If you're interested send me an email with your address and I'll send you mine.

Otherwise just leave me some suggestions down below.  Give me songs and albums please, not just band names.  I don't care if it's rock, country, pop, techno, broadway, folk, or jazz.  I'm open to anything that's good.

Rule #1:  Please include a track listing with the artist and song name.

*This statement excludes Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Bloc Party, Jack Johnson, Death Cab/Postal Service and a few others.  I love them.

John Lennon performs "Yer Blues"

January 16, 2007 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

I'm always trying to find new Beatles stuff online.  I thought I'd seen just about all of it but tonight I came across a video of John Lennon performing "Yer Blues" with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch Mitchell in the film Rock and Roll Circus.  The video starts off with Mick Jagger interviewing John where he is referred to as "Winston Legthigh" (Winston being John's middle name).  I'm always excited to find performances of songs from the White Album, so this was a good find for me.

Also, here's a video of Paul practicing "Blackbird".

Around Fairfield...

December 05, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I've been drinking a lot of coffee lately and I'm not too happy about it.  Say I buy a cup a day at 2 bucks a piece.  That's 730 bucks a year.... that's 730 double cheeseburgers I could buy.

I'm just kidding, but it is kind of a pricey habit.  It's something to do though.  Been going to Las Vetas Lounge in downtown Fairfield sometimes during my free time.  It's a good place to relax. Has live music every now and then and they do a movie night every Sunday.  There's a few Beatles references in there too including a "All you need is love" quote on the counter.  Bryan tried applying here back in September and one of the questions on the application was "Who is your favorite Beatle?"  Anyplace that has that on their job application must be good.

Another place I've been going to a lot for breakfast and lunch is Groovy's Cafe.  It's right down the street from Las Vetas, opens up bright and early and frequently has live music.  They have a wide selection of really good sandwiches and wraps.  Both places have good coffee and wifi.  So if you're ever in the area early in the morning or around lunch, give them a try.

Some things to check out:

  • Mappy Hour - a map site that shoes you good places to go for Happy Hour.  You enter in your location and it zooms you in and plots out any place that has happy hour near you with a Beer mug symbol.  It looks fairly new, so most bars don't have their info added in.  But with some effortless contributions, it could be a really cool website.
  • The Beatles "Love" - features 26 tracks of Beatles songs reworked and mashed together to make an all new and incredibly good Beatles album.  The album was produced by Sir George Martin and his son Giles Martin.  They were given one rule:  They could only use original Beatles recordings.  So while some of the songs sound completely different, it's still authentic Beatles.   "Get Back", "Drive My Car/The Word/What You're Doing", "Strawberry Fields", and "Hey Jude" are my favorites on the album.  DEFINITELY buy this.
  • A few other new Cd's that I think are pretty good are My Chemical Romance's "The Black Parade", and Incubus's "Light Grenades".  But I'm still extremely disappointed with music lately.  I need a new, revolutionary sounding band to come around.  Any suggestions?

Ringo Starr

July 17, 2006 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

I just saw Ringo Starr in concert!!!  He was great!  Soooo cool to see a living Beatle.  He sang "What Goes On", "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Yellow Submarine", "Photograph", and a bunch of other good ones.   My only disappointment was that he didn't come back for an encore and he never performed "Octopus's Garden".  His All-Starr band included Rod Argent, Richard Marx, Sheila E., Billy Squier, Edgar Winter, and Hamish Stuart and they were all great too. At the end of the show we walked around for a bit and got to meet Ron Campbell - the animator of the 1960's Saturday morning Beatles cartoon.  Now all I need to do is see Paul McCartney live.

If anybody knows somebody with a piano that they are willing to either give away or sell for a very low price let me know.  I just decided I want to teach myself how to play.

"The Fool On The Hill"

March 02, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

The Beatles... I'm a fan.  This one reminds me of Road Trip 2006 in the back seat with Jiggity Jowls when we saw the Bluth's homestead.  This song is from the movie/album "Magical Mystery Tour" and the video was filmed in Nice, France.

"Come Together"

This is from "John Lennon: Live in New York City".  The concert was performed in Madison Square Garden in 1972 and was a benefit concert for mentally handicapped children.  This is will probably be the last video I post for a while.

"Let It Be"

February 02, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Yet another Beatles video for those who enjoy them.  I don't have much to say about this video, other then it came from the 1970 film Let It Be which was only released in UK.  The album and film were postponed twice and then scrapped because The Beatles had recorded Abbey Road and wanted to release that album instead..  Both were later released in 1970 after the Beatles had broken up.  The song was released as single, and was The Beatles second to last #1 hit.

"Hey Jude"

January 26, 2006 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

The Beatles on the Frost ProgrammeThis is one of my favorite Beatles videos.  It's a 1968 performance of the song "Hey Jude" on The Frost Programme.  The song, originally titled "Hey Jules", was written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon's son Julian when John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia Powell, were getting divorced.

McCartney thought of the song on his way to visit Cynthia and Jules.  He later said, "I started with the idea 'Hey Jules', which was Julian, 'don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing.' I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always feel sorry for kids in divorce... I had the idea by the time I got there."

I love the mixed crowd in the video, especially the old guy with flowers in his hair.

Just click on the image below to watch the video:

If you listen to the studio version, you can hear John Lennon yell "fucking 'ell!" 2:58 into the song after playing the wrong chord on the song's initial take.  You'll have to turn up the volume a little, but you'll never miss it again.

SMiLE

January 12, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Brian Wilson's SMiLE as well as the original Beach Boys version of the album might be one of the best albums I've ever listened too.  My personal favorites on the album include:

  • Heroes and Villians
  • Cabin Essence
  • Wonderful
  • Surf's Up
  • On A Holiday
  • Wind Chimes and of course
  • Good Vibrations (I like the original version better)

Listen to it.

Update And A Video

November 19, 2005 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Picture_001FINALLY received my camera today after two months of it being in repair.  This was a crazy day.  I won a parking pass from Southern so I get to park in the faculty parking lot for a month.  Then I kicked some ass on a quiz, went to my paper shredding job, hit up the gym, went to work at the Yale School of Architecture for 2  hours, went to a work party in Hamden, ate some pizza, and then hung out with some friends at my place, drank some beer, and watched the debate over the Iraq war on C-Span.

Then just as I thought the day was over, I got a call from my friend Nicole who had run out of gas on the highway and needed help.  So me, my brother, and Nugget grabbed a tank of gas and went for a drive.  It's about 10 degrees outside and we were stuck out there for a good half hour, so I got fed up and left.  Now I'm wired, full of pizza, and have a full day of NOTHING to do tomorrow.  It's a great feeling.  I'm thinking about headed to NYC for the day.  But if I don't I'll find something else good to do, so check back Saturday night for pics.

Here's a Beatles video just for fun.  It's the song Lady Madonna.  Just click the picture to watch:

Welcome to the Island of the Honest Man

November 13, 2005 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Last night I saw Hot Hot Heat at the Webster Theater in Hartford.  Hot Hot Heat was good, Dsc02543but the other two bands, We Are Scientist and The Red Walls sucked pretty badly.  The Red Walls are anorexic.  I have no doubt in my mind about that.  They looked like toothpicks... I don't understand how people get themselves to look like that.  Hot Hot Heat played just about every song of their album Elevator and a few of their better songs from their previous LP.  If you haven't listened to Elevator yet you probably check that out... it's a great album.

Here is a video clip of the song "Island of the Honest Man" from last night.

Born Again Rocker

July 07, 2005 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

This post is for the Korn fans out there.  I used to be a huge fan of the band, and although I don't listen to them much anymore I'm still interested in the band members.  Back in February one of Korn's guitarists, Brian "Head" Welch, left the band because of his new found faith in Jesus.  I hadn't heard anything more until the following report came on CNN tonight.  I thought it was pretty interesting.

Part 1 (64.8 MB)
Part 2 (54.9 MB)

Update:  After the 7,000+ downloads and the more than 50 websites that linked to these files without permison I've decided to take it down.  If you'd like to see the video I'm sure you'll find it on some shitty Korn fansite... maybe not right away since they were all stealing my bandwith.

To the few websites that asked to link to my files or at least gave me some credit - thank you.

Back From The Show

May 12, 2005 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Weezer put on a good show last night at the Roseland Ballroom.  It seemed a little short to me and the crowd was somewhat dull but they played a lot of good songs.  After hearing some of the new songs live and listening to "Make Believe" a few more times I've really warmed up to it.  It's a great CD... one of their best.  So you should go pick it up.

In other news, I was hired at IHOP yesterday and I quit Pac Sun about 5 minutes ago.  And this afternoon I have an interview at Ruby Tuesday.  I need to figure out where I'll be making more money and stick to one job.  I go through so many jobs each year it's ridiculous.  I just get bored too quickly.

Finals are coming up next week.  I'm extremely stressed out  with trying to get all of my work done on time.  Thank God it's almost done.  Hopefully I'll start posting more once school is out of the way.

Hot Hot Heat

May 08, 2005 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I picked up Hot Hot Heat's new cd "Elevator" this week and I'm hooked.  ElevatorIt is such a great cd.  Every song is good...  every single song.  If you wanna listen to a few songs before picking it up you should check out "Goodnight Goodnight", "Dirty Mouth", "Elevator" and "You Owe Me An IOU".  They will be touring the US starting May 20th in NYC at the Webster Hall.  Tix are $20 and you will definitely find me there.

Other than that, there isn't too much good music out there now.  The new Weezer cd "Make Believe" comes out on Tuesday.  I've listened to it a couple times now and I'm not as disappointed as I thought I'd be after hearing the first single.  They have definitely lost whatever it was that made me love them back in the blue album days, but it's still a halfway decent cd, and it deserves a listen or two.
