Paul McCartney Receives Honorary Degree From Yale

May 26, 2008 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

This morning I caught Sir Paul McCartney in New Haven as he received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University.  I had no idea he was going to be there until around 10am when my phone started ringing off the hook.   Once I had all the details I gave JennMindy, Justin, and Brooke a call and we all raced downtown.  It was a short ceremony, and he didn't say anything.  They serenaded him with a quick rendition of Hey Jude,  gave him a bit of praise, and after a quick bow and a wave it was all over.

I thought it was a great way to start of Memorial Day.  It's not every day one gets to see one of The Beatles receive a degree.  Here's some video:

So many ideas

March 25, 2008 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

On top of the previously mentioned idea that I have about a Connecticut related blog, two other projects you may see coming shortly are a photo blog (something I've played around with in the past), and a blog focusing on music /The Beatles.  More details to come.

Speaking of photos.. I've been experimenting with some over-saturation on the colors in some shots.  I'm trying to give them somewhat of a vintage feel.  A friend recently commented that it makes the photo almost look like a painting.  Below are two that I took over the weekend.  Any thoughts?

Try something new

March 25, 2008 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

It's always nice to get out and try something new instead of following the same old routine.   I did a bit of that on Saturday and Sunday.  My friend Mindy and I went into New Haven to check out the Yale Art Gallery.  I was a bit surprised by the amount of famous artworks featured their permanent collection.  I spent years working directly across the street and I never had any clue they were there.  The gallery is free to the public and absolutely  worth your time if you've never been there.

Aside from the gallery, we met up with our friend Kam for some lunch at the Educated Burgher, drove up to East Rock, and ventured down to the coastline to check out Fort Nathan Hale.

The day's adventures got me thinking.  There are so many things to do around Connecticut that many people my age never seem to think of doing.  I wonder if maybe they simply don't know about them.  I frequently hear complaints that "Connecticut sucks" or have people tell me they can't go out because they're low on money.  Well aside from my lunch and gas, everything I did on Saturday was free.  It doesn't cost a penny to go to a park or the beach.  Museums and galleries rarely charge for admission and if they do it's a few dollars at the most.  There's so many things to do on a weekend aside from just going to a bar every Friday night at 10.

We live in a great state.  It's filled with cultural, historical, and recreational attractions.  Its proximity to New York, Massachussets and Rhode Island make it even better.  There's tons of great places to see and things to do that are all within a day's drive.  So an idea I have is to start up a new blog that focuses on these sort of things.  I have a few co-authors lined up, so it may be something we get going soon.  The blog will feature strictly localized content.  It's just an idea now, but I see this coming together in the near future.  It needs a name.  Any thoughts?

Paul Rudolph's Temple Street Garage

December 02, 2007 // 3 Comments  // Add yours »

Not sure what it is... but I really like the the Temple Street Parking Garage in New Haven.  The building next to it was recently demolished so it's become much more visible from the street.  Now I'm stuck staring at it for about ten minutes every day as I sit in traffic on my drive into work, and it's slowly begun to grow on me.

The architect, Paul Rudolph, seems to gets a bad wrap from critics, and many in the public hate his work for being too impractical, cold, and oppressive.  One of his building was even set on fire back in the 60's.   As a result of all the resentment, many of the buildings he designed have been demolished in recent years.

I'm one of the few who tend to like his work.  I couldn't tell you why, but I do. I guess it could be partly due to the fact that I used to work in one of his buildings.  But who knows.  I admit that I know very little about architecture so I have no authority on this whatsoever.

Anyway, the New Haven Advocate has a article on the garage this week.  Check it out.

New Haven has its nice parts

New Haven Harbor

If you drive down Townsend Ave. and stop at East Shore Park, Nathan Hale Park, or Lighthouse Point Park, you'll get some pretty nice views of New Haven Harbor.  The best time to go is probably around sunset.   There's paved walkways so you can go out for a walk along the water.  Seems fairly safe as well.

I was down that way last night for my friend Jennifer's wedding.  It was a lot of fun, as weddings usually are.  And I was lucky because I got to see a few friends that I haven't seen in a long time.  Some of them moved out of state and others I just don't get to see that often for various different reasons.  I even spotted a kid wearing a kilt and found out it was a Troop 3 scout who had bought it while on the troop's recent trip to Scotland.

Taking it easy

July 19, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

It's been a slow month.  I'm trying to take it easy until I go to Ireland in 3 weeks so I can save up a little extra spending money, so, I'm sorry if things are kinda boring on here until then.

But here's what's new:

  • I have somewhat of an exciting announcement to make once I get back from Ireland.
  • I'll be posting daily updates with pictures and video while I'm out there.
  • My brother Kevin gets to travel to England, Scotland, Whales, and Ireland in the near future with BSA Troop 3 from Derby.  They'll be posting daily updates on their blog at Troop3Derby.org.
  • Sally Jessy Raphael requested me to be her friend on Facebook yesterday. Ha!
  • I've been spending a lot of my free time hiking, biking, kayaking, hanging out at Starbucks, and trying to get better with photography.  If anybody ever wants to join me, be my guest.

And finally, here's a picture of me on the set of Indiana Jones 4.   I'm by the tree:

By for now.

Who is Radioman?

July 01, 2007 // 5 Comments  // Add yours »

Radioman, or "Radio" is a bum.  His real name is Craig Castaldo and he's a former homeless man from NYC who earned his name by having a large radio hanging from his neck.  What makes him stand out from other homeless guys is the fact that he's appeared in over 30 major motion pictures, including The Departed, Mr. Deeds, Elf, and Godzilla.

I first encountered Radioman while I was waiting in line to meet Paul McCartney last November.  At first I thought he was just trying to find a place to sleep, but then the next day we actually saw him in the building waiting in line with the rest of us.  I learned his name when a couple of guys walked by and shouted "Hey Radio!"  He sat there all night rewinding his tape and singing along to commercial jingles that he liked.   It was really annoying.

Fast forward to yesterday - I was in New Haven picking up my costume for Indiana Jones 4, when Radioman bursts into the door and runs right past security.  At first everyone was kind of startled, but once they realized who he was they brought him over, gave him a shave and a costume, and let him be an extra.

Following the last shoot of the day, Radioman walked towards Steven Spielberg to personally thank him for allowing him be in the movie.  Spielberg let him come right up to him, shook his hand and said  "No problem!  Great to see you again".  Again?  They know each other?  So I looked him up online.  There are pictures of Radioman kissing Jessica Simpson, a story about him in the New York Times, and even a profile on IMDB.   His website features pictures of himself alongside people like Tom Cruise, Pierce Brosnan, and Johnny Depp.

Radioman used to be homeless and a drunk, but now is able to support himself by collecting the small amount of money he earns from being an extra in movies, and by selling the autographs of the celebrities he meets.  Sometimes he sells autographs for sandwiches.  He's become well known among New York celebrities, and is a source of information for paparazzi because he's "in the know" when it comes to celebrity appearances and movie filming. He has hopes of becoming a big actor himself one day.

Look for me in Indiana Jones 4

June 16, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I can't say much about it, but I've been picked to be an extra in the upcoming Indiana Jones 4 movie.  I was given a call from the casting company Wednesday afternoon as I was driving to the Paul McCartney concert (see previous post).  They had me come down to New Haven Thursday morning to give me a "50's style" haircut and to get my costume fit.  Filming begins in about 2 weeks.  It'll be an interesting experience.  Hopefully I'll make it past the cutting room floor.

According to Wikipedia, "an extensive chase scene uses New Haven, Connecticut as a backdrop, including portions shot in Branford and Saybrook Colleges of Yale University. The chase will also use Yale Commons dining hall and Old Campus, and will be shot between June 28-July 7."

The movie stars Harrison Ford and is directed by Steven Spielberg.  It's set to be released on May 22, 2008.

The Indiana Jones Casting Call

June 13, 2007 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

The line

Yesterday my friend Patti and I stood in line for 5 hours to get a shot as an extra in the new Indiana Jones movie.  The casting call took place at the Omni Hotel in New Haven and the line stretched an entire city block.  We had heard that they were looking for people to play the parts of students, college professors, and cheerleaders.

The wait wasn't all that bad.  We passed the time playing "20 questions" and talking to strangers.  We even had some live bagpipe music for entertainment.  About two hours into the wait, we were told that if we didn't have a head shot they wouldn't let us in, so I had Patti snap a photo of me and I had to run  several blocks to a down Walgreen's to get a print.  Once inside we had to fill out an application that had questions like "Do you play football?" and "Do you own a dog?".  I was told that if I get the part I have to get a "50's-style" haircut.  That would be interesting, but I'll do it if I need to.

When it was finally my turn to go up I was asked a few short questions about my job and then told I'd get a call if they had a part for me.  He marked my application with an "S" and then placed it in a bin aside from the bulk of the applications that were placed on the table, so I'm hoping that means I have a shot.  Could "S" mean student?  I guess I'll find out soon enough. Here's a few more pics:

New camera stuff

I picked up some new camera lenses and did a little photo shoot the other night.  I think we got some great shots.  Going out to take some more this weekend hopefully.  Here's the only one I happen to have handy at the moment.  Still an interesting one I think.  You can see Rudolph's Yale A&A building in the background.

Starbucks doesn't open early enough

April 11, 2007 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

You know that you're up way too early when you you need to drive around the block for a half hour while you wait for Starbucks to open.  I just couldn't sleep last night.  So around 4am I said to hell with it and I went out the door.  I casually weaved in and out of tractor-trailers on I-95 while blasting The Beatles' Love album and drinking a Red Bull on my way to New Haven, and then made my way down to A-1 Pizza on Broadway for a lousy American cheese omelet where I was treated to some relaxing free-style rapping by a local homeless man.

It was 5:30 am and I decided it was time to make my way down to Starbucks.  I've got a ton of work to do today and SCSU's library doesn't open until 8, so I figured I'd kill some time there.  But of course they weren't open... so I gave myself a driving tour of downtown New Haven until about 6am.   I walk in and there's a white man and a black man arguing about whether or not Imus's comments actually hurt anyone's feelings.  I bought a venti vanilla latte, chocolate cake donut, and a Salsa Explosion cd, then found a nice quiet corner to get to work.

But then this guy comes in and he's sitting in front of me just staring.  Staring right at me while he taps his feet and nibbles on a crumb cake.  No coffee for this guy.  WTF????  Time for me to leave.

This group is great.  I had SUCH a good time Thursday night at BAR.  There were a few more of us there then you see in the pic.. I think Josh was the one taking it.  Bailey (on the right) kept swiping the beer glasses and stuffing his shirt with them so every two seconds you'd hear a smash...  freakin hilarious.  If you were there you would've been laughing your ass off.

Irish Nachos

February 14, 2007 // 4 Comments  // Add yours »

Ok I know this doesn't look all that pleasing, but trust me, it's DAMN good.  Irish Nacho's - bought from an Irish pub called Sullivan's- located on Chapel St. in New Haven.  I discovered it about a year ago and now it's hard for me to pass the place without stopping in and getting some.  This order was placed to go, so that's why the presentation isn't that great, but Christ it tasted so good.  It's regular french fries and sweet potato fries, covered in a ton of cheese, sour cream and chives.  Get it with a pint of Guinness or Smithwicks.  Forget about health food, the pleasure you get from eating this will automatically extend your life by 5 years.*

*May also cause a gain in weight.  But you know what?  That extra body fat will make you last longer if there's ever a famine.  So who gives a care.

It Happens

February 12, 2007 // 7 Comments  // Add yours »

On Saturday, Steph and I went down to IKEA in New Haven to pick up some stuff for the apartment.  It was really cold out, and Steph had forgotten her coat, so she ran ahead while I walked.  By the time I got in she was deep into the store and I couldn't find her.  I walked through the entire store 3 times and then finally decided I had to go back out to the car to get my cell phone so I could call her.  I left the store and began walking towards my car when all of a sudden BAM!  I was hit by a van.  I saw it coming  the second before it hit me and he wasn't going all that fast so I managed to jump on top of the hood and avoid any injuries.  Still, I was pretty pissed.  I punched his door and he got out and yelled "I'm sorry!".  I replied with "Are you f'n kidding me?!!"  Then I just let it go and walked away.

Below is a painful reenactment:

Underneath the New Haven Green

February 11, 2007 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

Ninesquares If you live in Connecticut, chances are that you've walked across the New Haven Green at least once before in your life.  It may be hard to believe, but buried just six feet below the surface are the remains of somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 people.  Between 1638 and 1796, the New Haven Green, then known as "the marketplace", was a commonly used burial ground for the colony's residents.  After about 150 years of use, the grounds started to become much too cluttered with gravestones and a new burial ground had to be established.  The last burial took place in 1821, and the practice was permanently abolished.  In the mid-1800's a beautification project placed several feet of dirt over the graves, hiding nearly all evidence of the thousands of people buried there.

The Green has been the home to several meetinghouses and churches since it's earliest days.  Currently there are three 17th century churches lined up in the center along Temple Street.  The one in the middle, known as the Center Church on the Green, is the fourth meetinghouse of the First Society.  In 1812 when the building was being planned they ran into a major problem - the location was right in the middle of the old burial ground and they did not want to disturb the graves of some of New Haven's most historical figures.  The solution was to elevate the church slightly, and including a basement that would serve as a crypt.  This way the graves could remain entirely untouched, and family members could still come to visit.

Center_church_crypt

The crypt is open to the public, and the gravestones remain in very good condition.  Several historically important people are buried there, including Reverend James Pierpont - the founder of Yale University, Benedict Arnold's wife, President Rutherford B. Hayes' family, and Theophilus Eaton, one of New Haven's co-founders and Governor.  Buried near the church's foundation is John Dixwell, one of the three regicide judges who heroically tried and condemned King Charles I to death, which automatically earned him his own death sentence from the crown.  He escaped punishment by fleeing to New Haven, where he hid in a cave on West Rock for some time and then later changed his name.  His grave simply reads J.D. because his relatives feared that if the British ever found out he was buried there they would exhume his remains, viciously tear them up, and display them on staves for the public to view.

If you have any interest in local history you should definitely give the Center Church and crypt a visit.  It's open to the public from April - October on Thursdays & Saturdays from
11:00AM-1:00PM, and by appointment during the winter months.  I just went there for the first time last week and I loved it.  A tour guide gave us some of the church's history, a little about it's architecture, and took us around the crypt grave by grave to tell us about the people buried there.  For pictures and more information visit their website at NewHavenCenterChurch.org.

Suspicious Package in New Haven

January 16, 2007 // 3 Comments  // Add yours »

I'm watching with excitement at a "suspicious package" in front of the Westville Kosher Bakery in New Haven.  I'm kinda stuck here at the moment because they have the intersection I need to pass through blocked off.  They just brought out the bomb sniffing dog... he seems pretty happy so I think that's a good sign.  Gonna stick around for a bit longer and see what happens.

I was just told to move farther back.  Maybe it really is something serious.  They're breaking out some equipment now.  Looks like maybe they're gonna blow it up?

Suspicious Package

Update:  Shortly after I posted this I gave WTNH a call to let them know what was going on because I didn't see any of the news channels covering it.  They said they'd send some people down but I never saw them.  NBC30 came after a while and shot some video from the side, but they've yet to say anything about it on their website other than that there is police activity in the area.  At one point I saw two officers approach the package with a black bag and a case and then lean down and do something to it.  They both walked away very quickly, waited a minute, then ran back to the package.  I don't know if they destroyed it or what.  But after that I was asked to move even farther back, and I really had to get to work, so I just ended up leaving the parking lot.  Now it's been about 3 hours since it all began and I still haven't heard what it was.  Somebody from WTNH emailed me and said they still don't know anything either.  I wasted part of my morning there so I'd kinda like to know now.

Crashing Rosa D's Party

December 08, 2006 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

I was bored at work, about to get out, when my friend Leeann gives me a call and asks if I wanna go to a Christmas party with her at Congrasswoman Rosa Delauro's office building in New Haven.  There was no way in hell I was gonna refuse free drinks and food... so bout an hour later after a quick drink at O'Sullivan's, we pull up in front of the place and realize that everybody inside is dressed up.... really dressed up.  Half of the men are wearing a tux, and the two of us are wearing ripped jeans and sneakers.  We snuck around the back so we wouldn't look like to random people coming in off the street and tried our hardest not to stand out too much.  We managed to fit in, with only a couple of funny looks and one comment about my choice of clothing.  Not too bad considering I had no business being there.  Inside we were treated to a open bar, free champagne, plenty of good food, Cuban cigars, roasted chestnuts, live music, and a chocolate fountain.   It reminded me of a smaller scale version of the gala I went to back in May, only without the crazed vegans.  I loved the randomness of the night.  I gotta start crashing more of these Christmas parties.

My apologies to the seafood industry:

July 18, 2006 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

Hot Tomatoes Only now after more than 22 years of life do I realize that I have been foolishly missing out on the glories of seafood.  I decided at a very young age that I didn't like it and I've gone almost my entire life up to this point boycotting any form of food that comes from the sea.  I don't think I ever had a very good reason.  I remember when I was little my mom would make my fish sticks and while I think I liked them at first, I slowly began to think they were disgusting.  I quickly realized I HATED tuna fish (and still do) and once I no longer liked fish sticks I decided that seafood wasn't for me.  And that was it.  I refused to try anything new that was labeled seafood because I was convinced I wouldn't like it.  But now, thanks to the constant encouragement from Stephanie Bell, I realize that I actually do like some seafood.  In the past month or so I've tried muscles, scallops, and smoked salmon.  Tonight I tried grilled Atlantic salmon with saffron cous cous, olives, sun dried tomatoes, and red onion at Hot Tomatoes in New Haven and I loved it!  We also tried something called Pasta Pillows, which is sweet potato ravioli covered in a sage cream sauce and is incredibly good!  But back to the seafood... I'm a sucker for avoiding it for 22 years and I realize the errors of my ways and I promise I'm a changed man.  To the seafood industry, I express my deepest apologies.  I should have given seafood a chance much, much earlier.  There's still many things I haven't tried and I admit that I'm still a little scared, but at least I'm willing to give things a shot now.

Pay Your Parking Tickets

May 31, 2006 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

Today started off alright.  I woke up bright and early and fully rested.  Went down to the gym for an hour.  Made it into work on time.  Had a good lunch.  I was feeling pretty good.  Around 3pm I was on the roof at Yale talking to my friend Steph on the phone when I saw a tow truck with a car that looked like mine driving down York St.  For a split second I thought it could be mine... but I couldn't imagine why I would get towed so I figured it was somebody else.

5pm comes around and I leave work and head for my car... but I couldn't find it.  Then I remembered watching that car get towed and I realized that it actually was mine.  Definitely felt like a sucker.  Back in February I had gotten a bunch of parking tickets within a short amount of time and forgot to pay... so the fees all doubled and when my parking meter expired today the New Haven PD decided to seek their revenge.

I called the police right away to find out where they had taken it, but they told me that they never towed it.  So I got a list of every place they use and called every one of them.  Each place told me they had never towed it.  6:00 comes around and I still have no clue where my car is.... I'm starting to think that maybe it was stolen.  Around 6:30 it finally shows up in the system, but they tell me I have to pay $300 in cash to get the car back.  Of course my wallet is in my car, and this just happens to be the first week in a long time when I've been short on cash.  Plus I had no way to get the the police department and the tow company to pick up my car.  Fortunately my friend Leigh rushed to rescue and saved the day.  By 9pm I had my car back, so me, Leigh, and Nugget headed down to O'Sullivans for some Irish nachos.  My afternoon was ruined and I'm gonna be tight on cash this weekend... but it was still an adventure, and now I know to always pay my parking tickets.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

March 12, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

St. Patrick's Day Parade happened in New Haven today!  I met up with a bunch of friends, we all had a great time, it started to rain, they left, and me and Steph decided to march.  Steph did a good recap, so I'll just link to hers.

Today's events started with naked ass photography/texting at the Playwright with Sean. After a fine meal, we headed toward O'Sullivans to meet up with Derby's finest, and started a large fight in an intense sidewalk gridlock, which involved the phrase "Why don't you keep your fuckin hands to yourself, Warden!"

"Bar" on Fire

February 09, 2006 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

I just found out that "Bar" is on fire!

This sucks!  I love Bar and I go there all the time.  I was actually planning on going there tonight once I got out of work but I guess that plan's changed.  I hope it's not too bad...  I need my mashed potato pizza and amber ale.

News Channel 8 says that while there was some water damage there was "no severe structural damage to the building". I guess that's a good sign.
