I'm finally ready to call attention to my photo blog - Riceminers.com. It's been up for a few weeks now but I wasn't quite comfortable giving out the link while it was still incomplete. Even now it still isn't 100 percent done, but you can head on over and check it out anyway. It's a hobby that I'm hoping to improve on. Many of the photos have already been posted here in the past. Leave some comments, and if you want a print, just click details and you can order one through Google Checkout. Keep an eye out more features and photos in the future.

April Takes Over

I thought I'd stop in and update everyone with what I've been up to. I realize it's been a while since I posted, and I definitely don't want this blog to be dormant.
Here's some highlights from the past several weeks:
- I won the trip to Martinique. I have no idea when I'm going yet, but it will be sometime between now and the end of November. Thank you to everyone who voted!
- The Guggenheim Museum - It's been the last big museum in New York that I had yet to visit, and I changed that a few weekends ago when I went there with Jenn and Mindy. I think I more impressed with the architecture than I was with the artwork.
- Flea Market - Another Jenndy Henri adventure. We took a day long road trip around the northwest corner of Connecticut stopping at the Elephants Trunk country flea market in New Milford, a small diner in the middle of nowhere, and then Kent Falls. It's worthwhile to just get in the car and drive with only a lose agenda. Try it.
- Little Italy - This past Saturday I ate at this great restaurant on Mulberry Street called Da Genarro. Check it out if you're in the city looking for a nice place for some outdoor dining.
- Kayaking - I finally busted out the kayak for the first time this year. Felt great. Hopefully I'll be picking up a second one in the near future so my friends can join me. It'll be known as the "frieyack".
- Photo Blog - It's out there, but I don't want to announce it yet. It's not quite done. You'll have to forgive the ridiculous name I've given it. I already owned the domain and didn't want to see it go to waste. The albums I have in the photo section of this website are about to go. Sorry friends, but you'll have to turn to Facebook if you want to see all the daily snapshots now on.
Here's a few pics from the other week:

So many ideas

On top of the previously mentioned idea that I have about a Connecticut related blog, two other projects you may see coming shortly are a photo blog (something I've played around with in the past), and a blog focusing on music /The Beatles. More details to come.
Speaking of photos.. I've been experimenting with some over-saturation on the colors in some shots. I'm trying to give them somewhat of a vintage feel. A friend recently commented that it makes the photo almost look like a painting. Below are two that I took over the weekend. Any thoughts?

Saturdays with the DSLR

It seems like it's becoming routine to head out with my camera on Saturdays. This time around I went with my brother Kevin, and we ended up going down to the factories on Canal St. in Shelton. Here's a few that I felt might be worth sharing:

I liked this last one because it caught a cop pulling over a car that had just run a red light. I took this from the top of the Derby parking garage looking out towards Shelton. Lucky for me but not for the driver I guess.

It was cold, and there wasn't much going on. So I went to the beach. I think it's a perfectly normal thing to do in the hours before a snowstorm. Here's a couple pics:

Cleanup Time

Time for an upgrade. It's been a while since I've made any real improvements to this website and I really want to expand the types of things that I have/can post here - beyond the blog, pictures, etc. So you can expect some changes and experimentation to come over the next several days. Feel free to criticize any changes you see. The last time I made a big alteration to the structure everyone seemed to hate it so I had to quickly change it back. I actually listen to the criticism and suggestions I receive here, so please give it.
On a somewhat related note: I think everyone should have their own website. Whether it be a personal blog like mine, or a portfolio-type website, or even just contact info, you should have some sort of fully personalized presence on the internet aside from your Myspace or Facebook profile. Social network profiles should merely be additions to whatever your website is. Be an individual and show some creativity. At least that's my personal opinion. Feel free to disagree.

My friends Luis and Mary got married today, so now I think I'm gonna call them Larry. Damn good times. The whole weekend was great actually. We've all been waiting on these kids for years now. I remember back in high school there were rumors floating around that Luis was going to propose to Mary at the prom. It didn't happen... they had both just started the rumor as a joke. Not it's almost six years later and they're married. I took a few pics (96 actually...) and you can find a bunch of them in the Pictures section.

Ten miles along the Appalachian Trail
September 01, 2007 //

If you're living in CT and you're not sure what to do during a free day, I suggest taking a hike along the Appalachian Trail. The trail is over 2,000 miles long, running all the way from Maine to northern Georgia. In Connecticut, it runs through the northwest corner of Litchfield County over some of the state's highest peaks.
I went for a hike yesterday with my friends Amber and Bret, with the goal of reaching the top of Bear Mountain. With an elevation of 2,316 feet, it's Connecticut's highest peak. We started off on a trail about five miles south of the mountain. There's a parking area that's only a short drive from the town center in Salisbury which brings you right to the beginning of the trail. After passing through a few fields we started a quick climb up the hill where we met up with the Appalachian Trail. From there we continued to the top of "Lion's Head" (1,738 feet) which gave us a seemingly endless view of Connecticut. If you're ever looking for a quick hike that offers great views, I strongly suggest giving this one a try.
We didn't stop there. Our destination was still another 4 miles away. From the top of Lion's Head we made a quick descent down a very steep and rocky path and then the trail gradually flattened out. The trail gave us a pretty smooth hike for several more miles. We passed by 3 different campsites along the way to Bear Mountain, two of which had natural sources of water.
We kept seeing postings that warned us of recent black bear sightings, so Amber was getting a little bit scared. It was every man (and woman) for themselves if we were ever to get attacked. Amber had the shortest legs, so she'd probably be the first to go.
By the time we reached the bottom of Bear Mountain we had successfully completed 4.5 miles without any bear sightings. We were in good shape. The hike hadn't been as bad as we thought it would be. The climb up the top finally gave us some strenuous hiking, although it wasn't half as bad as I had expected. As you climb upwards the trees gradually disappear and there's only small bushes and other plants covering the landscape. We had some incredible views as we climbed up towards the top. We were able to look back behind us and see where we had began, and off to our left we could see the Taconic Mountains in New York and the hills of Connecticut to our right.
At the top there is an eight foot tall pyramid made of large stones that was built in 1885. I tried reading the stone plaque at the base of it to find out who had put it there, but it was very difficult to read. We hung out on the top for about a half hour to catch our breath and to take in the views, and made a few phone calls to brag to our friends that we were the highest three people in the state at the moment.
Shortly after we began our hike back, we ran into some thru-hikers. These guys had started hiking the Appalachian Trail back in Georgia sometime around mid-April and had just made it to Connecticut. I asked them if they thought it was worth it and one of them enthusiastically told me "absolutely". He said he had quit his job and spent all his savings to pull it off. They expected to make it to the end of the trail in Maine in about six more weeks. Their body oder was overwhelming so we kept a good distance.
The hike back was much easier. We went much faster and took a few less breaks because we wanted to make it back before sunset. By the time we reached the top of Lion's Head the sun had already gone down, so our last mile was unfortunately in the dark. By the time we finished we had been hiking for over 4 1/2 hours, but other than some minor pain from a few small blisters we were feeling pretty good.
We're gonna try to do a full days hike along the trail soon, and then stay overnight at one of the campsites. I'm hoping to go the first weekend in October when the foliage is at its peak.

At Derby City Hall

The Mayor of Derby recently asked me for a copy of a picture I took of the Derby/Shelton fireworks. There's now two copies hanging up in City Hall. One is on the first floor outside of the Tax Collector's office and the other is outside of the Mayor's office on the second floor. While I was there I noticed some really good photographs of the Sterling Opera House hanging up as well. I was kind of in a rush so I didn't catch the photographer... but take a look if you're ever down there.

One last night in Limerick
August 10, 2007 //

This week has been unbelievable. Yesterday, after my stroll around Limerick, I checked out this restaurant across from my hotel on O'Connel St. called Luigi Malones a quick dinner. The food was great. They even gave me a glass of complimentary red wine which wasn't all that bad.
Following dinner I met up with my friend Rachel and from there we joined with a bunch of people for another night out at Molly's. Had a blast, although I came back home with a few scratches and a bruise on my back.

Today started off much like yesterday did. I walked around by myself for a bit.... ended up in People's Park and then made my way all the way down to the Hunt Museum to check out the 50's Chic/60's Cheek exhibit, which was somewhat of a disappointment due to the lack of photography they had on display.
That evening I met up with my friend Rachel and her friend Claire, who rode the bus with me up to the Ryan's where I saw Hazel and Mike once again. We all had some pizza (which wasn't all the bad) and then we made some plans for the night.
My last night there was incredible. Hazel, Rachel, Claire, and myself all went out to a a few pubs and a few clubs, including Nancy Blakes, Molly's, and Icon. I can't tell you enough how good it felt to be there... especially with Hazel and Rachel who I hadn't seen prior to this week in about 8 years.
At some point in the night a photographer took our picture. I guess it'll be in a Limerick newspaper sometime next week. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I had to end the night by packing for my trip back home. My flight leaves in just a few hours and I need to stay awake to catch the bus to the aiport.

Walking around Limerick

Today's been a good day to just take it slow. I have no plans and the weather isn't all that great, so I've just been going out for few short walks around Limerick city every few hours. I guess I'm really tired out from all the moving around I've been doing the past couple of days. But I'm still really enjoying myself because there's so much to see around here.
A bit earlier while I was out walking around, a stranger came up to me and asked if I could take a picture of him. He was pretty excited that I was willing to do it. I'm glad I took it because I kinda like how it ended up coming out. He was with a bunch of people who were drinking beer near the Treaty Stone along the River Shannon. I think they may have been homeless.

Scouting in Meelick
August 07, 2007 //

As the bus left the Cliffs of Moher we headed down towards the city of Limerick where Troop 3 unloaded their luggage into the Jury's Inn Hotel and I made my way to the George Boutique Hotel just a few blocks over on O'Connell Street.
Around 7:30 PM we all loaded onto another bus and took a trip to a meetinghouse north of Limerick in Meelick where the Troop 3 Scouts had a cookout with the scouts from Meelick. It was great watching everyone slowly begin to interact with each other. The kids were shy at first, but we all expected that. It reminded me of an 8th grade dance where the boys are on one side of the hall and the girls are on another. But Mike Ryan, the leader or the Meelick scouts, started up a few games and a campfire and once everyone was singing songs the kids all seemed to feel comfortable together.
As we left I heard one of the girls from the Meelick group tell one of the Troop 3 scouts to send her back a box of Lucky Charms - a sure sign that the American scouts had interacted with the Irish ones.
This night was special for me because I got to see a lot of people that I met during my first trip over to Ireland back in 1999 that i haven't seen since, such as Mike Ryan, his wife, his daughters Hazel and Rachel, and quite a few others. Mike pointed out to the scouts that I was the first exchange scout to say that I'd come back and then actually do it.
At night a bunch of the leaders from both troops met at the bar in the Jury's Inn. I went for a bit, then headed out to a bar called Molly's with Rachael and a few of her friends.

The Cliffs of Moher and The Burren

The bus driver for Troop 3 was nice enough to let me hitch a ride with them despite insurance concerns, so I was able to take an incredible tour of The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. It was great getting a bit of history from the tour guide while seeing all the sights. It was also kind of cool driving past the area I have pictured on the top of this website. My brother and Randy seemed to recognize it.
We spent a good hour at the Cliffs of Moher. They've finally completed all the construction so it was much more pleasing to see than it was the last time I came. It was great to have my brother Kevin see all the places that I love so much. I swear this part of the country is heaven on earth. You couldn't believe how incredible it looks until you've seen it with your own eyes.

Meeting with my brother in Galway

I woke up around 8, had some toast and orange juice for breakfast at the hostel, then parted ways with my friends from the night before. I headed down towards Galway bay to snap a few pictures. There's a beautiful beach with a walkway similar to what I had near my old apartment back in Black Rock, only they have a stunning view of the clean Atlantic Ocean in front of them and large mountains off in the distance. It's far better.

After my walk I met up with Kevin and the scouts from Troop 3 in Eyre Square, the park in the center of Galway. We went out for lunch at Supermacs and then jumped on their tour-bus. Next on the itinerary is a tour of The Burren and a cookout with the scout group from Limerick/Meelick.

Taking a break in Galway

I'm taking a quick break in Galway right now. I'm currently sitting in coffeehouse named Mocha Beans. I've only got a few minutes of internet access, so I'll have to hold off on the full update until later tonight when I head back to Limerick. But here's a few pictures from the past 24 hours.

This last shot is in Galway. These are some of the people I met. The two guys are from Germany and the girl, whose name is Laura, is from nearby Liverpool, England.

A hostel in Galway

I'm in Ireland, by myself, and I want to see something new. So I take a bus up to Galway, a city I've never seen before, and decide to stay in a hostel with five strangers. A great way to make friends, right?
It ended up working out nicely. I met two guys from Germany and two girls from Liverpool and we all went out for dinner and a few drinks. We ended up going to three different pubs, all of which played traditional Irish music. The last place we went to, the King's Head, finished off the night with "All you need is love" by The Beatles and "Always look on the bright side of life", a Monty Python Song.
It was such a great night. Everyone should visit Galway at least one day in their lives. I'll definately be going back.

A few short hours in Limerick before Galway

Alright so soon after I landed Richie Hayes picked me up from Shannon airport. After a quick chat he immediately drove me up to the top of this hill where I could see an unbelievable view of the Shannon region and Limerick. He was able to point out three different counties to me. Seriously, the view was unreal. It was incredible. There was a thick fog moving quickly up the hill so we didn't have very long to take pictures. One of them I posted the other day. He told me how they used to hang people up on top of that hill back in the very early 1900's.... pretty damn amazing.

From there we ventured up to Limerick University where I checked out some old abandoned mill and took a few pictures. Richie had to head to work so Tom and i walked around Limerick for a bit before I jumped on a bus headed towards Galway. It was just a 2 hour ride... but I knew I was going to fall alseep instantly, and I did.

A landing at Shannon

The plane started to descend, the sun rose up, the clouds broke away, and then I saw the Irish coast approach from underneath me. Next thing I knew it was snowing. Yes... snow. It was almost like a blizzard. Thick, heavy flakes and I couldn't even see the tips of the plane's wings. But as we got closer to the ground the snow turned to rain and as the sun began poking through the clouds forming a massive rainbow that I could see out my window. It was such an unbelievable sight.. I could never even truly explain it.
Anyway, I'm here. And we're driving on the wrong side of the road. More later.

Tutorial: How to create "clones" in Photoshop
August 04, 2007 //
0 Comments
// Add yours »
After I posted my "clone" photos last week, I received quite a few emails asking me how I did it. So I've decided to throw together a quick tutorial. Hopefully I can make this clear enough for everyone. It's really a quick and easy trick to pull off.
To do this you'll need to have Adobe Photoshop (I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS2), a camera, preferably a tripod, and a person to take the picture of.
- Decide what you want the subject to do in the photo. Try to make it interesting.
- Set the camera on a tripod. You'll be taking two photos and you need the background to be the same in both. If outdoors you need to take the picture fairly quickly so things like lighting and clouds don't change much. Position your subject for the first photo, then move them for the second without moving the camera or changing the adjustments. It's easier if the subjects positions aren't overlapping.
- Open the two photos into Photoshop. In the example below I'm attempting to make it appear as though my friend Luis is jumping over himself. If you don't have photos of your own to use but would still like to give this a try, you can use mine by clicking HERE and HERE.

Clones in Milford

A few experimental photos of mine taken during a great day of biking along the Milford coastline:

More new pics in the pictures section. Go check 'em out.
This weekend was perfect. My friends were shockingly active. My friend Nick Moore even invited me to a bar... which was monumental. Nick Moore NEVER goes to bars. Everybody was full of ideas and people felt like being outside for once. It was great. Bryan and I jumped into my car early Saturday and took spontaneous road trip down US-1 into Fairfield county. After a $4 red bull and an $8 roast beef sandwich in Westport we kept on going and found ourselves in downtown Greenwich. This was my first time down there so I really enjoyed it. Lot's of places to shop (even though 99% of the stores are targeted towards women), nice people, shockingly clean streets, and a bunch of restaurants and bars to chose from. It felt like a fake Europe (Feurope). We stopped in a small pub to take a quick break and to grab a drink. Two beers costs us twenty bucks before the tip. So we jumped in the car and I was running a little low on gas. Pull into a gas station - $3.55 a gallon. That's 50 cents more per gallon then it was that same day just a few miles over in New Haven county.
That night I was off to Stonebridge and Archie Moore's with Patti and company.
Today - several hours of biking along the beach in Milford, a quick jog, some intense Ireland trip planning, and some incredible homemade sheppard's pie, courtesy of my brother and my friend Brooke. We even made some deep fried Oreos for dessert.
Great weekend. It's been a while since I could say that.
In conclusion I'd like to point out that my friend Brooke has the fattest cat I've ever seen.

Taking it easy

It's been a slow month. I'm trying to take it easy until I go to Ireland in 3 weeks so I can save up a little extra spending money, so, I'm sorry if things are kinda boring on here until then.
But here's what's new:
- I have somewhat of an exciting announcement to make once I get back from Ireland.
- I'll be posting daily updates with pictures and video while I'm out there.
- My brother Kevin gets to travel to England, Scotland, Whales, and Ireland in the near future with BSA Troop 3 from Derby. They'll be posting daily updates on their blog at Troop3Derby.org.
- Sally Jessy Raphael requested me to be her friend on Facebook yesterday. Ha!
- I've been spending a lot of my free time hiking, biking, kayaking, hanging out at Starbucks, and trying to get better with photography. If anybody ever wants to join me, be my guest.
And finally, here's a picture of me on the set of Indiana Jones 4. I'm by the tree:
By for now.

Kevin's Graduation

Kevin, my youngest brother, graduated from Derby High School yesterday. His graduation seemed to be much more tame than mine was. If I remember correctly, somebody at my graduation had brought down the principles desk onto the field. Not too much in the form of rebellion at this one. Just an out-of-place lawn chair in front row. Congrats Kevin!
I've posted forty-six photos in the Newest Pics album.

Paul McCartney's Secret Gig at the Highline Ballroom
June 14, 2007 //

// Add yours »
I'm back from the Paul McCartney concert! Time for the recap:
Let me go back a few weeks to explain this. About a month ago I found out that Paul McCartney would be doing some type of live performance in NYC to promote his new album Memory Almost Full. Any large-scale world tour would be postponed to next year due to "personal issues" (his divorce from Heather Mills). So being a huge Beatles/Paul McCartney fan, I did some intense research until I found out the details of what would be going down.
I found out that the show was going to be a small-scale "secret" show about two weeks ago and that I'd have to win tickets through a radio station contest in order to go. Only a few hundred contest winners and invited guests would be given tickets. So after looking through the websites of nearly every FM radio station from the country's major cities, I finally found a contest where you could enter a raffle to win tickets by correctly answering 20 questions about Paul. I didn't win. But my friend Steph did, and she offered to take me. Amazingly, my friend Bret won as well and offered to take my brother Justin. So now we had 3 people from CT's smallest town attending a concert that thousands of people from around the world were trying to go to, and I was one of them.
More below the cut.

I went hiking through Shelton today. I took some photos and met a few interesting people. It seems like strangers feel compelled to approach me whenever I have a camera in my hands.

Dave and Alexis had their wedding yesterday. I posted a photo album in the pictures section and I'll have some video up later on. If anybody would like prints just let me know.

Thunderstorm Kayaking

My friend Steph joined me at the river for some kayaking on Thursday night. There were some storms nearby but we took a risk and headed down the Housatonic anyway. We didn't last too long before the rain came but we did manage to find a raccoon named Rocky before heading back. There's a few isolated beaches along the river I'd like to hang out on with some friends one night. I just need to convince more people to buy kayaks.

Got bored so I decided to visit my brother paparazzi style.
First came the stalking.
Then I was caught out.
Out he came.

I picked up some new camera lenses and did a little photo shoot the other night. I think we got some great shots. Going out to take some more this weekend hopefully. Here's the only one I happen to have handy at the moment. Still an interesting one I think. You can see Rudolph's Yale A&A building in the background.

Poke him with your finger and he can't move an inch. It's funny stuff.
