Coping with the commute

There's only a few people I know who enjoy their commute. My friend Steph is one of them. From my understanding, she gets to cruise through scenic country roads on her way to work. I'd imagine I might enjoy that as well. For most of us, the commute involves sitting in traffic with a bunch of miserable drivers on some major highway like I-95 and dodging street repairs and building construction. It can get depressing.
My commute starts off okay. I usually get to cruise past the traffic in the Naugatuck Valley and then along most of RT 34. By the time I get to downtown New Haven it all changes and the quality of my drive plummets. Some jerk might cut me off, the road could be backed up due to construction, or a pedestrian will dart in front of traffic and nearly cause an accident. Typical events like these could easily set a bad tone for the day.
There's a few ways I stay positive during the drive into work:
- Music (lately it's been The Beatles, Vampire Weekend, or Franz Ferdinand... played loudly)
- Coffee
- Fresh Air (always drive with the windows down)
Still, once I get downtown, my mood can easily change for the worse no matter what I do to prevent it. And then I think about how it's quite possible that I could be doing this for decades to come. Some days I wish I could ditch the car and walk to work, or at least take alternate routes. Unfortunately, it just isn't possible for the time being. Any tips from my fellow commuters on how to improve this unfortunate part of the day?
Update: Some responses I received from my twitter followers below the cut:

Vampire Weekend

For the past month or so I've been advocating that my friends listen to Vampire Weekend, an indie-rock band from New York that's been enjoying a great deal of attention following the release of their self-titled album in January. My brother recommended I give them a listen earlier this year and I've been a fan ever since. They've describe their genre as "Upper West Side Soweto" - sort of an indie pop/punk sound with an Afro-pop influence. It's really great stuff.. without a doubt one of the best debut albums I've come across in a while.
Ironically, as I was writing this post, I received a message from Ezra, the lead-singer in the band. It happened because I was chatting with a girl from New York who happened to know him. She got excited when she heard me listening to them, so she ended up sending him a text, and in response I received a message telling me to "rock on".
Give the album a listen. You'll enjoy it. Start off with "Mansard Roof", "A-Punk", and "M79". Below is their most recent single/video, "Oxford Comma".

Paul McCartney Receives Honorary Degree From Yale

This morning I caught Sir Paul McCartney in New Haven as he received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. I had no idea he was going to be there until around 10am when my phone started ringing off the hook. Once I had all the details I gave Jenn, Mindy, Justin, and Brooke a call and we all raced downtown. It was a short ceremony, and he didn't say anything. They serenaded him with a quick rendition of Hey Jude, gave him a bit of praise, and after a quick bow and a wave it was all over.
I thought it was a great way to start of Memorial Day. It's not every day one gets to see one of The Beatles receive a degree. Here's some video:

I came across some really good footage from the Paul McCartney show I attended this past June. It's shot from right about where I was standing. In fact, I think I can hear my friends voice on the video. Anyway, enjoy.

Here's some more footage from my recent trip to Ireland. This one starts off on the tour bus that I jumped on with the Troop 3 scouts from Derby, which brought us through The Burren to the Cliffs of Moher, and then down to our hotels in Limerick.

This is a real touristy-like video from my trip to Ireland. It's mostly just footage of the landscape from when I first landed and then while I was walking around Galway. It's more for my own memory than for anything else, but I'm sharing it anyway. I have one more clip coming.

Parts of a video that I shot of my mother and a bunch of other Keith Urban fans at Yale is now playing on the big screen at Keith Urban concerts across the country. I think it's kinda cool. She also gets to meet the guy at a concert sometime later this month. Here's footage with parts of the video playing behind the band at one of the recent shows:

New Webcam / Video Player

I've improved the webcam a bit. I'm rarely on there, but during those few times that I am you'll now be able to communicate with me instead of just watching. You can log into the chat, hear what I'm saying, and even communicate with video if you have a webcam of your own. I'm gonna put it to use when I go to Ireland in a couple of weeks. Whenever I'm not there I'll have some video playing so there won't be any "Offline" screen like there has been in the past. It'll be a good cure for boredom. You can find the webcam by clicking the "cam" link up above or by clicking HERE.
Alllllllsssooo, I've posted my video from Dave and Alexis' wedding here. Enjoy.
And some new pics are up as always. Take a look and leave comments please!

A party bus to Six Flags

My aunt and uncle were kind enough to treat my cousins and I to a trip to Six Flags New England this past Monday. Somehow we all managed to get the day off from work and it ended up being a lot of fun. My only gripe was the intense heat. It was in the 90's all day and the humidity was brutal. Thank god for the artic-like air conditioning on the party bus we rode there and back in.

The High School Days

My friends and I used to do some great stuff when we were younger. We need to bring back the days of the Riceminers. I've started putting the old videos up on YouTube and Riceminers.com still gets close to 100 hits a day... so I think I should start putting up new content again. I've been saying that for a while but it's been hard motivating people. So I might just go ahead with it on my own and see who joins in. Josh, Steve, Bobby, Nick, Shane, Chris, Justin, Kevin, and everyone else who used to be involved in some way... if you have any interest, let me know.
Here's "The Dream". It was put together using an old school camcorder, two vcr's, and a karaoke machine back in 2001.

Paul McCartney's Secret Gig at the Highline Ballroom
June 14, 2007 //

// Add yours »
I'm back from the Paul McCartney concert! Time for the recap:
Let me go back a few weeks to explain this. About a month ago I found out that Paul McCartney would be doing some type of live performance in NYC to promote his new album Memory Almost Full. Any large-scale world tour would be postponed to next year due to "personal issues" (his divorce from Heather Mills). So being a huge Beatles/Paul McCartney fan, I did some intense research until I found out the details of what would be going down.
I found out that the show was going to be a small-scale "secret" show about two weeks ago and that I'd have to win tickets through a radio station contest in order to go. Only a few hundred contest winners and invited guests would be given tickets. So after looking through the websites of nearly every FM radio station from the country's major cities, I finally found a contest where you could enter a raffle to win tickets by correctly answering 20 questions about Paul. I didn't win. But my friend Steph did, and she offered to take me. Amazingly, my friend Bret won as well and offered to take my brother Justin. So now we had 3 people from CT's smallest town attending a concert that thousands of people from around the world were trying to go to, and I was one of them.
More below the cut.

The Killer Blue Jay

As I walked out my front door this morning I was viciously attacked by a killer Blue Jay. I was just standing there at the top of my steps, minding my own business, when this evil bird swoops down from a nearby tree with it's beak wide open screeching at me. Before I even had a chance to duck, the back of my skull was being pecked at. It hurt like hell. The neighbor saw the whole thing and looked pretty shocked. She stepped out of her van and said "did that thing just attack you?". Yup, sure did. I looked up and saw it perching on a tree branch, ready for a second attack and told her to watch out for it, and that was that.
I found a nest later on. If you come here, beware of the birds.

This guy kicks ass. I'm making it my mission to see him in concert this year. The song All For Leyna is a recent discovery of mine and I'm slightly addicted at the moment. I LOVE piano rock.
He also has a new song out called All My Life. It's the first pop song he's recorded in over 13 years and it's pretty good.
Oh, if you're a South Park fan, and you find yourself bored at work in front of a computer every now and then, I suggest checking out SouthParkZone.com. You can watch every episode there for free.

Remember Modest Mouse? Their new album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is out and I'm absolutely hooked. It's probably not something everyone would enjoy though. The singer has a unique style, so you need to have a certain taste in music to fully appreciate the album. If you like upbeat, melodic, and creative rock, you'll definitely love it! Here's the video for the new single Dashboard:

Back from Portland!

Sean thought he'd want to come back home after 5 days in Portland for a journalism convention, but he was wrong. I'm just kidding I love CT. But I had so much fun in Oregon that I wish it lasted a lot longer. I had a blast while I was out there, and got to know some really great people. The trip was a 50/50 mix between boring but useful lectures and intensely fun nights spent bar-hopping around America's self-proclaimed Beer Capital. Here's a video and a recap of how the trip went down:
- Thursday - Everyone was still exhausted from the previous day's traveling, so I spent the morning by myself roaming around downtown looking for things I might want to check out during my time there. I had wanted to update my site so I stopped in at a Starbucks, but soon found out that free-wifi is hard to come across in the city of Portland. I stopped in a few more locations, hoping I'd be able to avoid wasting time sitting in the hotel, but had no luck. By the time I got back people were finally up so I met up with everyone and we went out for a walk. A few people had suggested we check out Powell's Bookstore on 10th and Burnside so we made our way down there. I wasn't in much of a shopping mood so I avoided exploring the city-block sized bookstore with the intention of coming back another day. From there we stopped in Henry's Tavern for lunch, where I had the best cheeseburger I've ever had in my life. The waitress was somewhat of a bitch, and gave Patty and Eliza a hard time for having the old version of the CT license. With 100 beers on tap, it was hard to avoid having a few before we left. Thus began a night of insanity.
- Friday - We all decided that we'd dedicate the day to attending our required 3 workshops and one of the keynote addresses. The first workshop I attended was called "Getting the most out of your on-line newspaper". It was run by the guys at College Publisher, who were absolutely terrible at giving presentations. It was highly uninformative and a complete waste of time. The next workshop focused on newspaper design - not exactly my area because web-based design works very differently. But I still got a few good pointers out of it. We all gathered for lunch and had a quick meeting with our adviser to discuss whether or not we should run a controversial story. I had strong opinions on the matter but decided to keep my mouth shut due to my lack of journalistic credentials.
- Friday Afternoon/Night - Took it easy for a while following the convention. Stopped down for a swim in the pool and then watched the movie Just Friends with Patty. At night we all gathered and ate dinner at a place called Lotus and then went out to a bar/club named Barracuda (a.k.a. "Barcelona"). I'd say it was the best night of the week.
- Saturday - Went on my walk up to Washington Park and the Japanese Garden in the AM and then went with the group back to Powell's Books. I spent a good hour navigating through the countless rooms in this place. I heard it's the largest non-chain bookstore in world - but I don't know that for certain. Either way, the place is massive and if you have any interest in books it's a must-see. We were all still worn-out from the night before, so we called it an early day and went back to the hotel to relax, encountering a few local-nut jobs on the way. At night we went to Romano's Macaroni Grill for our last dinner of the trip.
- Sunday - Left the hotel at 4:30 AM, ate lunch in Chicago around 2, made it back to Hartford at 6:45, and then made it home around 8:30.
I loved Portland. I never made it to Mt. Hood or the Oregon Coast like I had hoped because of the time restrictions, but I found more then enough within the city limits to keep me satisfied. Now that I've gotten a taste I know I'll be going back at some point in the future to see the rest. Check out the ACP National Newspaper Convention in Portland album for more pics.

It Happens

On Saturday, Steph and I went down to IKEA in New Haven to pick up some stuff for the apartment. It was really cold out, and Steph had forgotten her coat, so she ran ahead while I walked. By the time I got in she was deep into the store and I couldn't find her. I walked through the entire store 3 times and then finally decided I had to go back out to the car to get my cell phone so I could call her. I left the store and began walking towards my car when all of a sudden BAM! I was hit by a van. I saw it coming the second before it hit me and he wasn't going all that fast so I managed to jump on top of the hood and avoid any injuries. Still, I was pretty pissed. I punched his door and he got out and yelled "I'm sorry!". I replied with "Are you f'n kidding me?!!" Then I just let it go and walked away.
Below is a painful reenactment:

John Lennon performs "Yer Blues"

I'm always trying to find new Beatles stuff online. I thought I'd seen just about all of it but tonight I came across a video of John Lennon performing "Yer Blues" with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch Mitchell in the film Rock and Roll Circus. The video starts off with Mick Jagger interviewing John where he is referred to as "Winston Legthigh" (Winston being John's middle name). I'm always excited to find performances of songs from the White Album, so this was a good find for me.
Also, here's a video of Paul practicing "Blackbird".

Kevin Gets His Liscence

Kevin H. has passed his driving test and is now licensed to roam the streets in a vehicle of choice at will. Slightly scary, but I'm happy for him. I can't picture him behind the wheel. Hope he has better luck with cars than his brothers have had. Now I'm gonna go hide.
It's weird to think that it was seven years ago when I passed my test. Five years since Justin did. We shot a video for Riceminers back when Justin passed his. I remember that was a fun day. It was always Nick, Justin, Chris, Steve, and I roaming around somewhere in Nick's car with a video camera, blasting either Sublime or System of a Down. We'd usually end up at the post mall, McDonalds, Actors Colony, or KFC. Good times back then.

Here are some of Mal Evans' 8mm home movies of Paul McCartney shot back in 1967. They feature Paul's trip to Denver to meet Jane Asher, and to LA to meet with Brian Wilson for a Beach Boys recording session, and Derek Taylor. It also includes behind the scenes footage of the the filming of the "Magical Mystery Tour", and Paul's travels to places like Spain and Africa. Beatles fan's like myself should find this to be pretty interesting.

Black Rock

This weekend I went on our annual camping trip to Black Rock State Park with 15 friends... the largest group we've gotten to go so far. I've been going for about 10 years now and this was one of the best. The whole weekend was extremely relaxing and a ton of fun. Did some hiking, enjoyed some Bira around the fire, had some nice walks down to the beach, discussed dreams of being sultan, listened to some crows rap, killed a dragon, had some illegal convos, saw a few shooting stars, did some leg wrestling in the tent, spun a human top, took a short road trip up to West Hartford, and even tried kayaking in the lake until the life guard told me to get out. It was a great time... and if you didn't go because you thought that camping isn't fun you missed out.

Had an amazingly stress free weekend at a house up in the Berkshires with my friends Steph and Eric. Had some quality cheap wine on the ride up. I FINALLY got myself a kayak, and Steph and Eric already had theirs... so we got to kayak 3 different lakes, did some fishing, ate lots of meats, killed some caterpillars that had it coming to them, drank some quality local beer, ate copious amounts of glorious cheddar cheese, listened to some Beatles, checked out the Windsor Jambs, visited a bathing suit optional island, rode a scooter, scared a white dog, and heard from good tales from Steph's grandpa. Can't wait to go back!
PS. EVERYBODY should go buy a kayak! Best thing I ever bought!

I Love New York

I also love my proximity to it. Lately I've been going down to the city at least once a week. I had another completely spontaneous adventure there yesterday with Steph, who had just flown in to JFK from a vacation in California. I started off the day around 3:30 am when I left Derby for the airport. I hit absolutely no traffic and got there early, so I had some time to wander around and I think I saw Morgan Spurlock from Supersize Me going up the escalator next to me. I'm not a big fan of the guy so if it was him I'll never know cuz I just kept on moving. Once Steph got in we made a quick decision to head into Manhattan, so we hopped on the FDR and went on a quest for bacon. After an awesome breakfast in Bryant Park I suggested that we try to
see a Broadway show, but after looking into it realized that there weren't any on Mondays. So we hopped on the 6 train and headed down to the BODIES exhibition at the South Street Seaport which was really cool, but disgusting. After touching a real human brain we got pretty hungry so we stopped in at Mc Menamin's Pub on South St. for some Killian's, pizza, and sheppard's pie. After the food we headed back to the car and I found that I was blessed with another parking ticket and a massive sticker that they slapped on my window to make me feel bad for disrupting a street cleaning. We headed up to StubHub on 40th street to pick up the tickets, and while I was on the elevator this guy in a business suit next to me lets out this huge fart... sounded like a trumpet. No apology, no smile, no confession, nothing. He follows me in and gets his tickets right after me, and then ends up waiting behind me to take the elevator back down when he starts talking to me.
Halfway through his second sentence the fart trumpet rang out again. From there we headed up to Yankee stadium, where we bought some junk, drank lots of beer, ate expensive hot dogs and saw one of the best games I've ever been too. I don't think I've ever had more fun at a game. In the parking lot afterwords Steph was a lil tipsy and ended up getting hit by my car. A few minutes later we enjoyed a near deadly confrontation when an angry guy stepped in front of somebody else's car. They resolved it by pressing on the gas and hitting him.... a smart move. We ended the day the with the usual Beatles sing alongs and a secret nighttime concert. Check out the rest of the pics in the Newest Pics album.

Also here's a short video clip... nothing too exciting, just a couple seconds from the game:

Steph thought it would be funny to try to shave lightening bolts on her cat Rex so I decided to try to help her. The cat didn't wanna cooperate so he just ended up getting a few bald patches , but her dog Timber was a much more willing participant. He's sporting a stylish '06 on his back now.

This is the infamous video called "The Spanish Project" which I made with Justin, Nick, Chris, and a few others back in high school for my Spanish class. It's terrible, makes no sense, but it's pretty funny. Hope you enjoy it. Sorry for the low quality, the tapes pretty worn down.
