New Haven Register: Spiffed-Up Shubert

September 30, 2009 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

"Spiffed Up Shubert" - New Haven RegisterThis past Sunday, the New Haven Register reported on some of the restoration work the company I work for had recently completed for the Shubert Theater in New Haven.  The article, titled "Spiffed-Up Shubert", was featured on the front page of the "Arts" section and included a photo of some of us who had been involved with the project along with some of the lighting fixtures that were restored.  It was nice to see the compliment about lightrestoration.com, a website I've been writing for and maintaining over the past year.

You can read the article by clicking here.  For more information check out the project page and photo gallery.

Denied an iPhone

June 19, 2009 // 1 Comments  // Add yours »

Being a nerd, I ventured out early this morning to try to get my hands on a new iPhone 3G S from the AT&T store in Shelton.  I had checked multiple times with various AT&T stores to be sure I wouldn't be wasting my time by showing up at 7 in the morning, and they had assured me I wouldn't.  So, 7am comes along and the store manager steps outside and starts collecting names to start pre-registering everyone.  He gets to me, collects my information, and begins to walk away.  I asked if I'd be out of there pre-8:30 (had work to get to), and he said "No, we're not even letting you in until 9".  So I wasn't pleased.  Guess I'm stuck with the old iPhone for a few more days now.  Not the end of the world by any means, but still, quite aggravating.

Update:  I now have one.

Own your name (Pt. 2)

January 14, 2009 // 2 Comments  // Add yours »

One year ago I wrote about the possibility of having one's online reputation ruined through the poor choices of another person with the same name.  I suggested that in order for people to prevent this, they should register a domain, set up a blog, and get proactive in controlling their online identity.

A few people, including my friend Mike, took that advice and registered a domain.  I'm sure he's now glad he did because just the other night a person who had his same name, age, and lived in the same state was arrested on drug charges.

With his name broadcasted all over the news Mike quickly wrote a post on his blog titled "I DID NOT GET ARRESTED LAST NIGHT".  If Mike didn't take steps to control his online identity his reputation could have been permanently damaged.  But because he did, he was able to quickly clear things up via his blog and now if anyone were to Google his name they'd quickly find out the truth.

Moral of the story: start blogging or people may erroneously believe you're a drug dealer.

The new look

January 23, 2008 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Unless you're one of my RSS subscribers, you've probably noticed that I've completely redesigned this website by now.  I wanted to come up with a look that was spacious, visually appealing, quick loading, easy to read, and easy to navigate.  From my own perspective I think that I've accomplished those goals but what everyone else thinks is far more important.   So please let me know what you think!

Not all of the sections are up just yet but I'm hoping to have that changed by this weekend.  For now you can browse through the archives, watch the videos, or check out my photos.  If you're on Facebook, Myspace, or Bebo, you can click on one of the icons up above to directly view my profile and add me as a contact.  On the right hand side sidebar you'll find a list of most commonly visited posts, recent comments, and the most recent photo and video that I've posted.

So please share your thoughts.  And if you haven't yet voted for a chance to win a trip to Martinique, hurry up and do it!

Picked up an AirCard

January 15, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Cingular3g I just signed up for Cingular's 3g service, which is a wireless broadband network that covers most of CT's coastal region and the NYC metro area.  It's kinda expensive at $60 a month, but I figured it's worth the cost considering I do just about everything online from paying my bills, looking up directions, keeping in touch with friends, organizing events, researching things, and entertaining myself.  Screw cable - as of today, it's canceled.  I love being outdoors and being out as much as possible so now I can do that and still be productive.  I can even go online in the middle of the woods if I wanted to.  Not that I ever will, but the thought that I could is kinda cool.  The speeds fast and the coverage is awesome where it's available.  I guess I don't hate Cingular anymore.

Another thing I can do is broadcast live streaming video wirelessly from anywhere I want.  If I have my webcam connected you can watch me driving my car, walking down the street, or drinking a cup of coffee in a cafe.  Now that won't happen because it's absolutely stupid and pointless, but the capability excites me.  I'm sure I'll put it to good use at some point.

Right now I'm at Las Vetas and Ben Folds Five is playing... I love it.  Never knew.  Gonna have to give it a good listen.

Update:  Nevermind about the webcam stuff.  I can't do it.  Cingular doesn't allow it.   I hate them once again.

Wikiholic

January 05, 2007 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Nohatlogonowordsbgwhite200px On any given day about a hundred random little questions pop into my head that I immediately want an answer to.  Or I'll hear about something that catches my interest, like just recently I wanted to learn more about the Opium Wars and the history of illegal drugs after hearing a friend ask how drug use came about.  So instead of going to a library and digging through a pile of books, I hop on my laptop, go to Wikipeida.org and I have all the information I need within seconds.  I probably look up anywhere from 5 to 20 topics on a daily basis, and the cool thing is that within each article they link to related topics, so when you start reading about one thing you end up clicking on a link to a related topic, and start learning about something you didn't even expect to.

Today for some strange reason I started wondering how old the oldest tree on earth is.  So I found it on Wikipeida, and learned that it was a tree growing in Nevada named Prometheus that was 4,862 years old.  It was cut down by a grad student that was studying the Little Ice Age by looking at the rings in trees.  While reading the article the words "Little Ice Age" caught my attention so I checked it out and found out that in 1780 New York Harbor  completely froze, allowing people to walk from Manhattan to Staten Island.  Then I started reading about New York Harbor, and then Governor Peter Stuyvesant,  and then New Netherland, to Fort Hoop, to the Dutch West India Company, to Manhattan, to Battery Park, to the discovered Battery Park Wall, which is where I stopped off.

So I acknowledge I'm a nerd, but I recommend borrowing some of my nerdy ways and start using Wikipedia.  But be careful, it's addictive!  I actually looked up Wikiholic, and this is what I found:

"A wikipediholic or wikiholic or wikipediaholic is someone with a serious addiction to anything involving the words "Wiki" and/or "Pedia" in the same word or sentence. It is often considered an obscure form of OCD. One of the main, and most common characteristics of the condition is the victim having a web browser window constantly open to the Recent Changes section of Wikipedia (or in the condition's slightly milder form, one's Watchlist), and pressing the "Reload" or "Refresh" button with a high frequency. Others click the "random page" button instead. It can lead to a serious decrease in productivity in all other areas of the victim's life, like any other addiction. That's why we're called "Users", after all."

Adobe Announces Creative Suite CS2

April 05, 2005 // 0 Comments  // Add yours »

Yesterday Adobe® announced it will be releasing Adobe® Creative Suite CS2 in May 2005.  The premium edition will cost $1,199 and the standard edition will sell for $899.

Adobe® Creative Suite 2 Premium software is a unified design environment that combines full new versions of Adobe Photoshop® CS2, Illustrator® CS2, InDesign® CS2, GoLive® CS2, and Acrobat® 7.0 Professional software with new Version Cue® CS2, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Stock Photos. Delivering the next level of integration in creative software, Adobe Creative Suite 2 enables you to realize your ideas anywhere — in print, on the Web, or on mobile devices.

I'm especially excited about the release of Adobe® Photoshop CS2.  These are my two favorite new features:

Revolutionary Vanishing Point

Achieve amazing results in a fraction of the time with the groundbreaking Vanishing Point, which lets you clone, paint, and paste elements that automatically match the perspective of the surrounding image area.

Vanish_point

Image Warp

It also has a new red eye reduction tool, a new spot-healing brush, smart objects (allows you to edit vector images), multiple layer control, and Adobe Bridge - allowing you to edit multiple images at once.  Photoshop CS2 will sell for $599.
