Update - Nov 18, 2008

Holiday Pie Sale: Pie pickup this Wed, Nov 19, at 5:30PM. These ready to bake pies are frozen and will thaw if not kept cold. Contact Mrs. Linda Spinetti if you have any questions.

Popcorn orders: Also pick up at troop meeting this Wednesday. Mrs. Cynthia Tracz is our Popcorn Kernel.

Nov 20 - Troop Committee meeting, 7PM at 2nd Cong Church

Dec 1 – Order of the Arrow Christmas Campfire.  Osbornedale enclosed pavilion at 7PM . All OA members expected to attend.

Dec 5-7 – Tierney Lean-tos Troop Campout  - Signup $5 with Mr. Raymond Oppel. Must be registered by Nov 26 to attend.  Survival themed campout. Scouts learn and lead by actively participating, so let's keep the Outing in Scouting.

nov 19 – Iron Chef theme

nov 26th- Iron Chef Cookoff Patrol leader and patrol quartermaster to come early at 6:30PM to light charcoal fires. Theme: pizza. Troop supplies dough, sauce, and cheese. Patrols need to provide other supplies like toppings . Patrols need charcoal and cleaning  supplies. Can prepare ingredients at home.

Eagle Scout candidates: Monday, 12/22, is the FINAL Advancement Committee Meeting of the year.   Scouts need to have their project review scheduled and Board of Review paperwork to the Council Office NO LATER THAN December 12th.

Nov 14 to 15: Troop camping overnighter at the Poppa's and day hike at Osbornedale State Park. This is our November troop camp out activity and it is open to ALL Troop 3 scouts. We will camp at the Poppa's at 5 Derby Neck Rd beginning at 6PM on Nov 14 and we will hike the trails of Osbornedale on Nov 15, finishing at 2PM. Breakfast will be provided, each scout to bring a bagged lunch , canteen of water  and the 10 essentials . Signup this Wed with Mr. Oppel – NO COST.

Nov 15 Scrap 'n Chat Fundraiser for Housatonic Council. First United Methodist Church, Shelton. $40 all day 9-5, $30 half day. For more information contact Scrapbooking Queen Sue Stankye, 736-9539.

Nov. 27 Commodore Hull 5k Road Race: In an effort to promote "A Scout is Physically Strong", Troop 3 Assistant Scoutmaster Edward Faulkner is offering to sponsor any Troop 3 Scout who registers and runs in the Thanksgiving morning 5K road race through Shelton and Derby. Registration is limited to first 600 runners. Information and on-line registration here: http://www.electronicvalley.org/derby/HullRace/index.htm  Troop 3 Eagles Ed Faulkner and Steven Ng are two of only 35 people to have run in all 5 races. Eagle Scout Stephen Poppa is already signed, will you join him?

Care package for someone serving in the military abroad is due by each patrol on Nov 5. Also include a thank you letter from your patrol along with your mailing address. Please also provide the mailing addresses for any service men or women you may know by Nov 5.

Troop 3 Scouts who work at the event will not have to pay for a meal. We are also asking for families to donate a dessert tray with 30 of the same item for the mixed dessert trays we will make (drop off tray at 11AM on Nov 8, or a gift basket valued at $50 for the raffle. This weekend, Oct 17-19 is the Fall Camporee at Strang Scout Reservation

Arrive as close to 6PM as possible on Oct 17 (some daylight remains for setting up tents). Depart at 10AM on Oct 19 (all scouts expected to stay and do their share of takedown & cleanup). Patrols are responsible for meals & cleanup supplies. This event is rain or shine, so BE PREPARED. Brief PLC following Camporee closing ceremony, no PLC Sunday night.

Ed Strang Day on the Derby GreenThanks to all who participated. Full attendance earns 200 points. Several scouts earned points for inviting friends to the event. We had 2 Cubs, 2 Scouts and a Venture Scout join.

Popcorn Sales: How is each patrol doing? Patrol Leaders to announce patrol sales to date tonight. Deadline for orders is Oct 22.

Greenraising sale: ends Oct 15. You can have friends and family order online at www.greenraising.com/index.aspx?AFID=549   We earn 40% profit from online sales through Oct 15.

Advancement: Reminder, Scouts must attend a minimum of 75% of troop meetings and campouts to be considered active for rank advancement. This applies all the way to Eagle Rank.

Backpacking weekend to move from Nov 14-16 to Oct 24-26. For 1st Class Rank scouts and above. Signup begins tonight. We will hike approx 10 miles over the weekend.

Ed Strang Day on Sunday rain or shine

Johnfrontnew061_r1_c3 Our 15th Annual Ed Strang Community Day will take place on Sunday, Sept 28, rain or shine.
In the case of wet weather the event will take place inside of the Derby 2nd Congregational Church.

Please be sure to arrive in Class A uniform at 10AM for setup. The public is invited from noon to 4PM.  Scouts are encouraged to bring their friends and will earn 200 points for each scout age friend to attend.

Brian Dennehy tickets for sale at Ed Strang Day

1994_ed_strang_day Scouts to offer tickets at Ed Strang Day for Brian Dennehy performance
DERBY - In honor of the 15th anniversary of stage and screen star Brian Dennehy's visit to Derby to honor his former Cubmaster, the late Edmund D. Strang, Boy Scout Troop 3 has arranged to offer a limited number of tickets to Dennehy's November 15, 7PM closing night performance of Hughie, by Eugene O'Neill at The Long Wharf Theater in New Haven.  One of the last works O'Neill ever wrote, Hughie premiered at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and is directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls.
The premium seating tickets, which do not include transportation to Long Wharf Theater, are being offered at a reduced rate of $50 each and will be available for sale beginning at noon on September 28 at Ed Strang Community Day on the Derby Green. The event has been held annually since Dennehy's visit in 1994, as a way to showcase the adventures of Scouting to the community.
The event features food, music and hands-on outdoor skills stations run by the scouts for children, such as dutch oven cooking, model campsite, monkey bridge, obstacle course and first aid. In addition, the Derby Fire Department will participate with a fire truck and renown raptor expert Jonathon Woods, who will present his birds of prey, including a bald eagle.
The event is free to the public and free Scouting registration will be offered to youths who join Cub Scout Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 or Venture Crew 33. Ed Strang Day is being sponsored by Ducibella Venter and Santore, Derby 2nd Congregational Church and Derby Elks Lodge 571.

T3 update 9/10/08

07_beaver_weekend_fall_camporee_002 Our troop campout for September is Beaver Work Weekend at Strang Scout Reservation on Sept 19 & 20. We will all camp as a troop in the Camporee field (including all T3 OA members except OA officers).  Arrive after 6PM on 9/19 and depart after 8PM if you are staying for dinner on 9/20.  There will be a half day of service projects and a half day of coveted "free time".
If you register with Mr. Oppel by 9/17 the cost is only $5 (the troop will pay the other $10 being charged by the OA for Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner meals). Signups begin tonight.
We are updating our troop roster contact information (phone numbers and email addresses) tonight.  See Matt if you are interested in filling several of our open troop positions.
$25 annual troop dues ($20 each if multiple scouts in troop) is due by Sept 17.
All scouts who contribute at least $1 to their account in the summer camp thrift fund savings program tonight will be eligible for the special $10 thrift fund drawing.
There will be a special Life Scout meeting from 7:30 to 7:45PM on Sept 17 during the troop meeting. Items to be discussed are definition of "active membership" and "leadership requirements" required for Eagle Rank, Eagle projects and special Eagle Court of Honor on May 31 at the troop's 95th anniversary celebration. Parents of Life Scouts are encouraged to attend.
Deposits and Sept. monthly payments for the Summer '09 Canyonland Adventure supertrip are now due. All people interested in this trip must have deposits in by Sept 24. Don't miss out on this once in a lifetime trip to America' s Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion Nat. Park, Canyonland, Bryce Canyon and Las Vegas.
Ed Strang Community Day on the Derby Green is Sunday, Sept 28. Setup is 10AM to Noon, event is Noon to 4PM, takedown is 4 to 5PM. Each patrol has selected a station to run during the day for the community and they must have at least one patrol adult present during this event. Everyone is needed to help make this a Scouting showcase event for the public.
