Day 1: CT to the Pennsylvania Wilds

The truck and Airstream

Day 1 – 06/12/26: Today was the day we rolled out. Destination: the Pennsylvania Wilds, a remote part of PA known for elk, dark skies, and wide-open wilderness.

Note

This is a quick version of the full story, just to get something logged. More to come!

We planned for an 8 a.m. departure so we could arrive early, but that never really happens when you have young kids, does it?

We left at 2:30 p.m.

The drive was pretty smooth at first, with arrival estimated for a little after 8. Then came the low tire notification. By some stroke of good luck, we found Mavis Discount Tire in Lake Ariel, PA, and they were willing to take a look right away. They found the leak, fixed it, and didn’t charge us a thing. A very bright spot in an otherwise frustrating setback.

Getting the tire leak repaired. Not a scene I expected for our first day.

From there, the sun went down fast, and right around then, a line of severe storms rolled through.

We managed, and pulled into camp around 10:30 p.m. A few nice gentlemen, who may have had a few beers too many, came over to lend their advice on the backing-in process, which was... an experience.

Not exactly the Day 1 we imagined, but we’re happy to be here.
